Job Description

Railroad Construction Field Engineer

The Field Engineer provides field oversight and inspection for ongoing projects to monitor progress and ensure conformance to engineering plans, specifications/construction, as well as ensuring compliance with required/prescribed quality standards. This position will require heavy traveling as most of the work will be done out in the field throughout the many states we are operating in.
Responsibilities
  • Partner with the Project Manager to oversee the design and implementation of construction projects
  • Create and inspect drawings and designs for projects.
  • Work as a liaison between contractors, subcontractors, vendors, suppliers, and customers
  • Document work flow processes and provide updates on work progress
  • Ensure proper maintenance of onsite equipment
  • Supervise and direct onsite crew
  • Draft and submit reports
  • Complete daily inspections of Job Site
  • Ensure conformance of field work with contract specifications and documents
  • Availability to work 7 days a week (base will be 40 hour work week)
  • Monday – Friday during the pre-construction phase
  • Must be available for field work occasionally on weekends once construction begins
  • Observes construction practices are required for compliance of project/construction operations with federal, state, and local codes, industry standards, company procedures, and contractual requirements
  • Performs inspection of construction activities
  • Coordinates internally with other project execution disciplines and external suppliers to ensure proper quality control planning is performed
  • Helps create and/or gather required documents and information to support the successful completion of relevant project activities
  • Helps represent the construction team in project meeting settings
  • Makes sound and prudent decisions and recommends course of action, especially when only limited facts are available
  • Solve problems quickly in the field
  • May be tasked with other special duties as assigned by the Project Manager on technical projects (i.e., investigation, analysis, and design) in specific areas of expertise
Skill Requirements
  • Railroad construction experience preferred
  • Understanding safety guidelines
  • Attention to detail and excellent time management skills
  • Analytical and strong problem-solving ability
  • The ability to communicate in a professional manner with owner’s representatives, coworkers and direct supervisors
  • Ability to complete work under time pressure and to maintain composure under the stress of emergency situations
  • Must be able to work well with others
Work Experience Requirements
  • Railroad Construction experience is preferred
  • Must be able to read and understand construction plans, drawings and specifications
  • Experience with civil construction/track work, preferred
  • Knowledge of track or general construction, preferred
  • Familiar with Microsoft Suites, P6, HCCS and BIM, preferred
  • Familiar with Submittal and RFI process
  • Understands safety guidelines
Education Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED required
  • 4 year college degree in Construction Management/Engineering
  • Or, 5+ years of construction experience with 3+ years of managing/supervising work crews
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work in extreme all-weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow and sleet)
  • Able to walk on uneven surfaces over sometimes great distances
  • Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery; bend, walk, stand and sit for extended time
  • Exposed to loud noise
  • May be exposed to live track/trains and high voltage
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Must be willing to travel
  • May be required to work long hours including evenings and weekends
