Director, Field Medical Excellence

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, Field Medical Excellence based in the United States.

This senior leadership role defines and drives the global vision for Field Medical excellence, shaping how Scientific Exchange Professionals engage with healthcare stakeholders and generate meaningful scientific impact.
You will be responsible for setting best-in-class standards for scientific exchange, insight generation, and stakeholder engagement across global Medical Affairs teams.
The position plays a pivotal role in benchmarking industry practices and translating insights into scalable capability-building strategies.
You will act as a strategic architect of Field Medical performance, ensuring consistency, quality, and innovation in scientific engagement worldwide.
This role operates at the intersection of strategy, capability development, and medical excellence transformation.
You will partner closely with global leadership, regional teams, and Centers of Excellence to elevate organizational performance.
It is a highly influential role with both internal and external thought leadership responsibilities across the medical affairs landscape.

Accountabilities:
  • Define and continuously evolve the global strategy, vision, and operating framework for Field Medical Excellence across the organization.
  • Establish and maintain best-in-class standards for scientific exchange, stakeholder engagement, insight generation, and SL/KDM impact.
  • Develop global competency models for Scientific Exchange Professionals, reflecting current and future capability needs.
  • Benchmark Field Medical performance against industry peers, associations, and emerging best practices to identify capability gaps.
  • Translate benchmarking insights into actionable strategies that elevate Field Medical excellence and organizational performance.
  • Design and implement frameworks to assess Scientific Exchange Professional effectiveness using qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Define leading and lagging indicators of Field Medical success and ensure consistent performance measurement globally.
  • Build scalable capability development programs covering onboarding, advanced scientific skills, and leadership progression.
  • Partner with training and capability teams to embed excellence into learning curricula and development ecosystems.
  • Drive innovation in Field Medical practices, including digital engagement, omnichannel strategies, and AI-enabled insights.
  • Analyze global performance and engagement data to generate strategic insights for senior leadership decision-making.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to Global Medical Affairs leadership and represent the organization in external scientific and industry forums.
Requirements:
  • Advanced scientific degree (MD, PhD, PharmD, or equivalent) required.
  • 5+ years of experience in Medical Affairs with strong Field Medical or Scientific Exchange expertise.
  • Proven track record as a high-performing Scientific Exchange Professional and Field Medical leader.
  • Experience leading global capability-building, transformation, or medical excellence initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of scientific communication, clinical research, and stakeholder engagement in healthcare environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence across complex, matrixed global organizations.
  • Strategic thinker with strong executive presence and proven change leadership capabilities.
  • Experience developing competency frameworks, performance models, or capability assessment systems.
  • Familiarity with digital transformation, AI-enabled solutions, or analytics in Medical Affairs is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and external engagement skills, including participation in industry forums or publications.
