The Wellbeing Manager serves a distinctive and essential function within the Office of Institutional Engagement and Wellbeing, leading the university's informal resolution efforts and supporting the broader implementation of the Wellbeing at Pitt Framework. This role reflects Pitt's commitment to fostering environments of psychological safety, care, and respect—where all members of the community feel supported and empowered to address interpersonal challenges constructively.
The Wellbeing Manager oversees efforts related to mediation, conflict resolution, and restorative practices for matters that fall outside formal disciplinary or policy violation processes. In addition, in close partnership with offices around the university, they develop and steward initiatives that bring the Wellbeing at Pitt Framework to life across the institution—translating its model and guiding actions into coordinated programs and practices that advance individual and community flourishing.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in higher education, conflict resolution, social work, counseling, public health, organizational development, or a closely related field.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in mediation, conflict resolution, restorative practices, student affairs, ombuds services, or a related role within a higher education or complex organizational setting. Combination of education and relevant experience will be considered in lieu of education and/or experience requirement.
Demonstrated experience facilitating difficult conversations and supporting individuals and groups through conflict with impartiality, empathy, and skill.
Knowledge of restorative justice principles and informal resolution best practices.
Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across a wide range of campus partners and community members.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, psychological safety, and a trauma-informed approach to interpersonal support.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree is strongly preferred, or terminal degree in higher education, conflict resolution, social work, counseling, public health, organizational development, or a closely related field.
Certification or advanced training in mediation, conflict resolution, or restorative practices.
Experience working in partnership with Student Affairs, Human Resources, or a university ombudsperson's office.
Familiarity with wellbeing frameworks and socio-ecological models of campus health, such as the Wellbeing at Pitt Guiding Framework or the Okanagan Charter.
Experience developing or implementing well-being-related programs or initiatives in a higher education context.
Knowledge of the University of Pittsburgh's community, policies, and institutional culture.
Manages an overall organization educational engagement for faculty, staff, and students with respect to institutional engagement and wellbeing. Works with leadership on engagement strategies and to support efforts to retain students, faculty, and staff. Assists in the strategic planning of educational outreach, educational initiatives for faculty and staff, and policy. Executes comprehensive cross-cultural educational opportunities.
Essential Functions
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the university's informal resolution processes, including mediation, conflict resolution, and restorative practices, for matters not rising to the level of formal policy violations across student, faculty, and staff populations.
Serve as a skilled, impartial resource for individuals and groups navigating interpersonal conflict, facilitating productive dialogue grounded in the Wellbeing Framework's commitments to psychological safety, care, mutual respect, and belonging.
Develop, implement, and continuously improve informal resolution policies, procedures, and resources in alignment with institutional values and best practices in restorative justice and alternative dispute resolution.
Build awareness of and access to informal resolution services across campus through outreach, education, and collaboration with academic and administrative units.
In partnership with Student Affairs, design and advance initiatives that operationalize the Wellbeing at Pitt Framework, embedding its whole- university approach—including institutional, campus community, organizational, interpersonal, and individual layers—into practice across the institution.
Collaborate with Student Affairs, Human Resources, the Office of the Provost, and other campus partners to ensure wellbeing framework initiatives are coordinated, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all community members.
Use data, assessment, and inquiry to evaluate the effectiveness of informal resolution services and framework initiatives, supporting continuous improvement and transparent reporting.
Foster relationships with campus partners—including student organizations, faculty governance, and staff groups—as active participants in co-creating a culture of wellbeing and belonging.
Physical Effort
Duties are primarily sedentary. Must be able to use a computer at a desk or similar workstation, and travel to on-campus meetings as needed.
