The Project Accountant will manage advanced project accounting activities throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring accurate financial records, compliant billing processes, and reliable reporting. This role requires strong collaboration with project management and finance teams while supporting continuous improvements to accounting operations.
- Create and maintain project records, purchase orders, and change orders within the ERP system based on approved documentation.
- Verify contract terms, billing rates, task codes, funding limits, and project setup requirements for accuracy.
- Provide accounting guidance and support to project managers throughout project initiation, execution, billing, and closeout activities.
- Review project financial information and provide insights into project performance, billing status, and financial health.
- Partner with project managers to monitor invoices, resolve issues, and ensure timely collection activities.
- Collaborate with billing teams to deliver accurate and compliant client invoicing according to contractual requirements.
- Lead recurring coordination meetings with project stakeholders to address financial questions, reporting needs, and system-related topics.
- Maintain complete project documentation, including client and subcontractor compliance materials.
- Conduct audits, reconciliations, and exception reviews to ensure ongoing data accuracy and policy compliance.
- Prepare and submit client billings, research discrepancies, and implement corrective actions when needed.
- Monitor cash receipts and support proper application of payments to outstanding invoices.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, automation, and ERP processes.
- Support audit activities, reporting requests, and cross-functional finance initiatives.
- Expand accounting and systems knowledge through training while providing support to broader finance teams.
The ideal candidate brings strong project accounting experience, attention to detail, and the ability to operate independently in a remote environment. They should be comfortable managing complex financial processes, collaborating with multiple stakeholders, and improving operational efficiency.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in project accounting, billing projections, contract administration, or related finance roles.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, including debits/credits, percentage-of-completion concepts, and billing schedules.
- Experience working with ERP or project accounting platforms, with Deltek Vantagepoint experience preferred.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools, particularly Excel, Outlook, Word, and Teams.
- Ability to analyze financial records, reports, and documentation with strong attention to accuracy.
- Experience identifying issues, evaluating solutions, and implementing process improvements.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially in remote collaboration environments.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively within a team.
