Job Description

Associate Corporate Counsel

About Us

At The Reading Group, we operate across two distinct and dynamic business sectors. Our commercial real estate arm, Experimental Holdings, focuses on the acquisition, management, and sale of commercial property assets. Our product-driven arm, Spectrum Laboratories, oversees the nationwide retail and wholesale distribution of our primary product line. We are seeking a highly motivated attorney to join our in-house team to help protect and support both of these unique enterprises.

The Role

Reporting to the head of the Legal Team, the Associate Corporate Counsel will oversee the Company’s litigation matters across both business divisions. This includes handling pre-litigation correspondence, managing outside counsel during active litigation, and driving post-judgment collections. The ideal candidate is a proactive, detail-oriented attorney with 2–5 years of experience who can manage potential disputes from start to finish while assisting with broader compliance and corporate transactions as needed.

Responsibilities

Support and manage diverse litigation matters across both business sectors, including commercial landlord-tenant disputes, eviction matters, and post-judgment collections.

  • Support intellectual property disputes and brand enforcement matters (including trademark infringement) by evaluating risk versus reward, drafting cease-and-desist letters, and assisting with overall case strategy.
  • Promptly retain and actively manage outside counsel for ongoing litigation, ensuring business teams and ownership are regularly updated on case status and strategy.
  • Coordinate discovery, evidence collection, and litigation strategy, acting as the primary liaison between internal business teams and outside counsel.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with multiple departments to gather necessary documents and ensure employees follow company procedures for documenting counterfeit evidence and complaints.
  • Provide accurate and timely counsel to executives on a variety of legal topics and maintain current knowledge of pertinent legislative changes.
  • Assist the Corporate Counsel on commercial transactions, including conducting due diligence review and legal research, as needed.

Required Skills

J.D. from an accredited law school

  • Active law license and in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, preferably with the State of Ohio.
  • 2–5 years of litigation experience. Experience litigating commercial landlord-tenant disputes, post-judgment collections, or intellectual property matters is strongly preferred.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized with exceptional communication skills and a strict standard of professional ethics. Must thrive in a small business environment, seamlessly balancing independent task management with cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 applications (including Word, Teams, and SharePoint) and legal research tools.

Wages are negotiable within the competitive salary range set by The Reading Group. The ranges have been established based on organization, industry, and national standards. Desired salary expectations will be discussed during the interview process.
