Job Description

Principal Front End Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Front End Engineer based in the United States.

This is a senior technical leadership opportunity for an engineer who wants to shape frontend engineering practices at an organizational level.
You will define modern frontend architecture, tooling, standards, and development practices across multiple teams and applications.
The role combines hands-on engineering with technical strategy, mentoring, and cross-functional influence.
You will build accessible, high-performance, user-centered web applications serving government customers and mission-critical users.
A major focus will be on design systems, frontend infrastructure, automated testing, accessibility, performance, and developer experience.
You will partner closely with product, design, backend, and engineering leaders to turn complex requirements into practical, scalable solutions.
This is a fully remote role offering the opportunity to make a broad technical impact while working on meaningful public-sector technology initiatives.

Accountabilities:
  • Define and drive the strategic direction for frontend engineering practices, architecture, tooling, standards, and technical capabilities across the organization.
  • Lead the architecture and development of scalable, accessible, performant, and user-focused web applications, with a strong emphasis on Section 508 and WCAG compliance.
  • Design and implement modern frontend architectures, build systems, development workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment infrastructure.
  • Establish and maintain shared component libraries, design systems, and reusable frontend infrastructure that improve consistency, quality, and engineering velocity.
  • Champion engineering excellence through best practices for mobile-first development, testing, performance optimization, accessibility, code quality, and maintainability.
  • Modernize frontend technology stacks and lead technical initiatives that improve application quality, developer experience, reliability, and delivery efficiency.
  • Establish robust automated testing strategies spanning unit, component, and end-to-end testing, including accessibility validation within CI/CD pipelines.
  • Partner with product managers and designers to balance user needs, business objectives, technical constraints, and implementation effort when shaping solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership across teams, influence architectural decisions, and serve as a strategic advisor for frontend initiatives with organization-wide impact.
  • Mentor and coach engineers at different levels, helping develop frontend expertise, engineering standards, and career growth pathways.
  • Contribute across the full stack when necessary to solve complex problems, while maintaining frontend engineering as the primary area of expertise.
  • Communicate technical strategy, architectural decisions, risks, and recommendations clearly to engineers, product leaders, designers, executives, and other stakeholders.
Requirements:
  • 10+ years of related software engineering experience, with a demonstrated record of delivering production-grade frontend applications and leading significant technical initiatives.
  • Proven expertise architecting and implementing modern web applications at scale using React and/or Angular.
  • Strong proficiency in modern JavaScript/TypeScript and a deep understanding of web platform APIs, CSS architecture, responsive design, and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Strong practical experience with frontend build and deployment tooling such as Webpack, Vite, pnpm, npm, or comparable technologies.
  • Hands-on knowledge of automated testing, including unit testing with tools such as Jest or Vitest, component testing with React Testing Library or Angular Testing Library, and end-to-end testing with Playwright, Cypress, or similar platforms.
  • Strong understanding and practical implementation experience with WCAG 2.1 AA, Section 508, accessibility linting, and automated accessibility testing using tools such as axe-core or eslint-plugin-jsx-a11y.
  • Experience with state management, asynchronous data handling, API integration patterns, REST and/or GraphQL, and backend service integration.
  • Knowledge of frontend performance optimization, Core Web Vitals, asset optimization, CDN strategies, monitoring, progressive enhancement, and cloud-based frontend deployment.
  • Experience establishing CI/CD pipelines incorporating automated testing, accessibility checks, linting, and quality controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain design systems and reusable component libraries across multiple applications.
  • Strong product mindset, with the ability to collaborate with product managers and designers and make pragmatic trade-offs between user experience, business value, and technical feasibility.
  • Proven leadership experience guiding large-scale initiatives from concept through production and influencing technical outcomes across multiple teams.
  • Strong communication, documentation, stakeholder management, and mentoring skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and cloud deployment patterns is valuable.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain Public Trust 6C.
  • Comfortable working remotely with approximately 0–10% business travel.
Benefits:
  • Estimated base salary range of $147,292–$199,278 per year, with actual compensation determined by experience, geographic location, and applicable contractual requirements.
  • Full-time schedule of approximately 40 hours per week with a remote work arrangement.
  • Multiple medical plan options, including plans with Health Savings Accounts, plus dental and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) savings plan with company matching and pre-tax and post-tax contribution options.
  • Flexible work arrangements where possible to support work-life balance.
  • Paid time off, including vacation, sick and personal leave, with new employees typically receiving up to 15 days of paid leave per year.
  • Approximately 10 paid holidays annually, with additional paid parental, military, bereavement, and jury-duty leave.
  • Paid Family Leave program providing up to 160 hours over a rolling 12-month period for eligible employees.
  • Short- and long-term disability, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, personal accident, critical illness, and business travel and accident insurance options.
  • Opportunities to work on large-scale technology initiatives spanning AI, cloud, cybersecurity, software development, and mission-focused solutions.
  • A remote environment that supports senior-level technical ownership, cross-functional collaboration, and continued professional growth.
