Respiratory Therapist – RWJBarnabas Health

Assesses patients pulmonary status, develops plan of care in collaboration with the physician and nurses and delivers respiratory care to patients, Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments and medical errors, etc. As a Respiratory Therapist, you will play a vital role in assessing, treating, and educating patients with cardiopulmonary conditions while working alongside an interdisciplinary team dedicated to exceptional care. A typical day for a Respiratory Therapist may include:
• Assesses patients' pulmonary status, develops plans of care in collaboration with physicians and nurses, delivers respiratory care, and reports identified safety issues such as hazardous environments and medical errors.
• Adheres to documentation standards by contributing to interdisciplinary care plans, recording interventions consistently with expected outcomes, and maintaining multidisciplinary teaching records.
• Assumes responsibility for reducing length of stay through timely clinical interventions and delegating follow-up treatments appropriately.
• Collaborates daily with the multidisciplinary team on respiratory care plans, teaching, discharge planning, and reinforcing care with patients and families.
• Evaluates treatments, initiates appropriate therapies (such as MDI, HFN, CPT, and aerosol treatments), and conducts accurate pulmonary histories and assessments.
• Performs emergency intubations, extubations per MD orders, management of ventilated patients, and ventilator transports.
• Participates in monitoring patient care outcomes, quality improvement targets, and identifying variances that impact length of stay.
• Participates in orienting new associates, serving as a preceptor, and mentoring team members to advance clinical skills.
• Performs ABG processing procedures, provides cardiac monitoring within the scope of practice, and responds to CAC/life support measures.

Job Qualifications/Education/Training/Certification/Licensure Comments
• AA/AS degree preferred
• NJ licensure as Respiratory Care Practitioner required
• CRT or RRT Certification by NBRC preferred
• BLS required
• Certifications in PALS and NRP to be obtained within the first twelve months of employment for all full and part time staff
