Overview

Electric Boat’s Portable Machining team supports critical Columbia program milestones by performing precision, onhull machining and repair operations directly on submarines and major assemblies. Our team specializes in highaccuracy field machining on exotic alloys including Inconel, Monel, KMonel, HYseries steels, Titanium, and other highperformance materials. We are seeking a highly motivated Operations Supervisor to lead a team of portable machinists and support the expanding demands of new construction and overhaul programs.

Role Overview

The selected individual will supervise approximately 10-15 machinists performing mobile machining operations on-hull and throughout the shipyard. This includes setup and operation of portable machining equipment such as lineboring systems, flange facers, manual and CNC driven mills, drill stands, valveseat machining systems, and other fielddeployable precision tools. The supervisor will ensure effective use of manpower and resources, manage daily work execution, and provide both technical and administrative support to the team.

This position requires strong experience in highmix, lowvolume machining environments and a solid understanding of precision machining practices applied in nonshop, onhull conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily instruction and oversight for machinists, ensuring safe work practices are utilized in the execution of work
  • Direct daily field machining operations to meet quality, cost, and schedule goals in accordance with approved work plans.
  • Drive continuous improvement in machining processes, work control, safety, and span time reduction.
  • Ensure strict compliance with EB procedures, NAVSEA requirements, field machining controls, and safety regulations.
  • Provide handson technical guidance for setup and operation of portable machining equipment and precision measurement in challenging, onhull environments.
  • Manage trade performance, daily scheduling, manpower assignments, and cost tracking.
  • Deliver daily status updates to the General Foreman, including progress, issues, and resource needs.
  • Oversee training, qualification, coaching, and professional development of field machinists.
  • Promote and maintain a positive, inclusive team environment built on accountability, communication, and respect.
  • Ensure operator proficiency in machining exotic materials and in performing work within shipyard accessrestricted or confined spaces.
  • Interface with all levels of EB management, NAVSEA/SUPSHIP/NR personnel, and supporting organizations.
  • Work collaboratively with HR and Employee Relations to resolve concerns and uphold EB standards of conduct.
  • Perform additional duties as required to meet organizational objectives.


Responsibilities

  • Competence interpreting mechanical drawings, blueprints, and shipyard work documents
  • Understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
  • Ability to perform applied math including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Ability to read and interpret EB procedures, field machining instructions, and construction documentation

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
  • Ability to work all shifts as required

Must meet one of the following:

  • Minimum 1 year trade experience at electric boat
  • Minimum of 3 year combined relevant experience and leadership experience in a high-volume setting
  • Minimum of 1 year EB experience and an Engineering degree in a related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years supervisory or workinglead experience
  • Minimum 5 years machining experience in a shop or portable application
  • Familiarity with testing procedures related to new construction or overhaul of major submarine components
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program or technical degree
  • Experience supporting machining of complex components using portable/onhull machining equipment or conventional shopbased HBM/VTC/lathe/mill operations
  • Strong practical knowledge of precision measurement practices and instruments used in field machining
  • Experience working in an ISO 9001/9100certified machining environment
  • Thorough knowledge of machining data (speeds, feeds, tooling) for a wide variety of materials including steels, stainless steels, Monel alloys, Inconel, bronze, titanium
  • Familiarity with EB Business Systems such as EWP, MRP and experience in utilizing MS Office, and other related EB programs
