Description

As a Rail Systems Engineer for the Utah Transit Authority, you will:

  • Coordinate system engineering activities with respect to all rail systems that include signals, stray current, traction power, Positive Train Control (PTC), and overhead catenary systems.

  • Review as-built drawings and compare them to actual field conditions.

  • Design modifications to existing systems and direct the implementation of the design in the field.

  • Participate in and provide technical expertise in creating and reviewing project design criteria and design activities. Activities include design review, submittal reviews, factory acceptance testing, field installation, testing, and capacity improvements for rail signal, traction power, and overhead catenary systems.

  • Prepare technical reports, cost estimates, and schedules as needed.

  • Work with contracted personnel as needed for systems-related processes and projects. Work closely with other departments for items that need collaborative solutions.

  • Report Positive Train Control progress as required by the FRA. This reporting includes the management and monitoring of PTC-recorded events that need closure and reporting.

  • Help prepare and submit other systems-related reports and analyses as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience/Education/Licenses

  • Five years of progressively more responsible experience in project design, development, construction, maintenance, testing, and implementation of rail systems and rail signal fields. Preferred two years of demonstrated competence in managing engineering projects, particularly railroad or rail transit projects.

  • At least one year with demonstrated progressive competence in leading others.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related field.

  • Must have a valid Utah driver's license and no more than 4 moving violations in the past 3 years; cannot have more than 1 violation of driving under the influence of alcohol or any drug within the last 10 years.

Knowledge

  • Strong working knowledge of train control, traction power substations (TPSS), OCS, PTC, and other related systems, industry procedures, and industry trends.

  • Electronic, electrical, and mechanical systems theory for signals, TPSS, OCS, and PTC reviews.

  • Electronic, electrical, and mechanical test, safety, and troubleshooting procedures.

  • Word processing and data calculation knowledge is required. Knowledge of databases is preferred.

Pay Rate: 102300.00 or more, depending on experience
