The University of New MexicoDepartment of Neurology seeks a neuromuscular neurologist to join our faculty.We are looking for a dedicated clinician-educator with expertise inneuromuscular disorders and a commitment to providing outstanding patient carein the outpatient setting at the University of New Mexico Hospital ClinicalNeurosciences Center.

Our neuromuscular faculty providescomprehensive care for the full spectrum of neuromuscular disorders, includingperipheral neuropathies, motor neuron disease, neuromuscular junctiondisorders, muscular dystrophies, inflammatory and inherited myopathies,hereditary neuropathies, and complex nerve and muscle disorders.

Clinical responsibilities includeoutpatient patient care, electrodiagnostic testing, neuromuscular ultrasound,and the management of patients receiving advanced therapies for neuromusculardisease, including infusion-based biologic treatments and gene-targetedtherapies.

Academic responsibilities includeparticipation in the teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows andresearch activities of the department.

The successful candidate is expectedto have excellent communications skills and the ability to work collaborativelyin interdisciplinary teams.

Neuromuscular Neurology at UNM:

The neuromuscular section benefitsfrom foundation-supported philanthropic funding with a strong history ofcontinued investment to advance clinical care, research and education.Multidisciplinary ALS and Muscular Dystrophy clinics are recognized as certifiedCare Centers by their respective national organizations and are supported byexternal funding.

New Mexico is home to the largestknown population of individuals with Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy (OPMD)in the world, providing unique opportunities for clinical care, education, andresearch.

UNM Department of Neurology:

The Department of Neurology includes43 faculty members across a broad range of clinical and research disciplines.The department supports vibrant clinical programs, basic science and clinicalresearch initiatives, and well-established adult and child neurology residencyprograms.

Fellowship training opportunitiesinclude a clinical neurophysiology fellowship that trains two fellows annually,along with additional subspecialty educational programs.

University of New Mexico Hospital andSchool of Medicine:

University of New Mexico Hospital isthe state's only Level I Trauma Center and serves as New Mexico's primaryacademic medical center and tertiary referral center. For best consideration, please apply by 8/31/2026. This position will remain open until filled.Minimum Qualifications:
  • MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree
  • Board certified or board eligible in neurology
  • Completion of an adult neurology residency by the start date
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of New Mexico
  • Eligible to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of a neuromuscular or clinical neurophysiology fellowship by the start date
  • Experience diagnosing and managing patients with neuromuscular disorders
  • Expertise in electrodiagnostic testing (EMG/NCS); experience with neuromuscular ultrasound is desirable
  • Interest in neuromuscular clinical research and/or scholarly activity
  • Commitment to medical education and mentorship of learners
  • A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the University's mission to serve local and global communities.
