Job Description
Sauk Valley Community College (SVCC) invites applications for the position of Academic Advisor/Veteran Representative. This position reports to the Director of Admissions and Academic Advising, and is responsible for implementing the mission and goals of the student services and academic advising program.
Located in rural northwestern Illinois along the scenic Rock River, SVCC is situated between the cities of Dixon and Sterling, placing it just one hour from Rockford and the Quad Cities, and two hours west of Chicago. Direct Student Advising & Support
- Provide academic advising to new and prospective students with or without an academic major; explain policies, procedures, and program requirements; and assist students in selecting educational and career goals. Document student contacts.
- Consult with the students regarding academic problems or concerns and assist students in obtaining support to meet these specific needs.
- Review, interpret, and evaluate applicant test scores and other information to determine eligibility status.
- Provide current information to students on university/college articulation issues.
- Function as a collector, disseminator, and interpreter of educational and career materials.
Specialized Populations & Programs
- Act as a Health Career Program Advisor and assist students with formal application to limited admissions health career programs at the College.
- Provide direct assistance to veteran students in the form of academic advising and educational planning for eligible certificate and associate degree programs.
- Work in conjunction with the Coordinator of Veteran Services to meet the needs of student veterans.
Student Retention & Systems Management
- Utilize retention-based resources and best practices to assist with assigned student case load persistence and retention.
- Assist the Director of Admissions and Academic Advising in operationalizing the features of the student retention software to ensure full platform utilization, manage workflows, and ensure proactive student outreach that supports student persistence and success.
Assessment, Institutional Service & General Duties
- Participate in student-related research and evaluation of effectiveness of academic advising services.
- Serve on institutional committees related to the welfare of students, as requested by the supervisor.
- Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
Essential Functions

- Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
Communication & Presentation
- Must have strong communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to communicate effectively by phone and email on a daily basis.
- Must be able provide verbal/visual presentations to faculty, staff and students on a daily basis.
Technical Skills & Work Schedule
- Must be able to work with Microsoft Office products.
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
- Bachelor's degree in education or related field with three years’ experience in an educational setting.
- Computer skills, and excellent written and oral communication skills required.
- Master’s degree; community college experience and knowledge of Banner and Navigate 360 software strongly preferred.
- Must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the community college philosophy.
