Associate Medical Director (Medical Affairs)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Associate Medical Director (Medical Affairs) based in the United States.

The Associate Medical Director will play a key role in developing high-impact scientific content that advances medical education and supports better patient outcomes.
You will combine strong scientific expertise with strategic medical communications skills across multiple therapeutic areas and client accounts.
The role offers the opportunity to lead and mentor medical writers while maintaining high standards for scientific accuracy, quality, and compliance.
You will serve as a trusted medical partner to clients, translating complex scientific information into clear and compelling communication strategies.
Working closely with account, project, and cross-functional teams, you will help shape medical communication programs from strategy through execution.

Accountabilities
  • Lead and mentor medical writers across assigned therapeutic areas and client accounts, supporting professional development and fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Review, revise, and oversee medical and scientific content to ensure accuracy, consistency, strategic alignment, and compliance with applicable client and industry standards.
  • Serve as a key medical advisor to clients, contributing to medical strategies and the design, development, and analysis of communication tactics and deliverables.
  • Act as the primary medical point of contact for assigned projects, building trusted client relationships and providing clear strategic and tactical guidance.
  • Translate complex scientific data into compelling, accurate, and actionable narratives for healthcare audiences, including primary care physicians and specialists.
  • Partner with account and project leads to understand project scope and status, support appropriate budgeting and resourcing, and maintain effective communication across cross-functional teams.
  • Contribute to business development activities by supporting proposals, developing scientific content for pitches, and identifying opportunities to strengthen client partnerships.
  • Participate in departmental and broader organizational initiatives and take on additional responsibilities as needed.
Requirements
  • 3+ years of experience in healthcare communications, preferably within an agency environment, with a demonstrated history of producing high-quality medical and scientific deliverables.
  • Advanced degree in life sciences, medicine, pharmacy, or a related discipline; a PhD, MD, or PharmD is preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create clear, concise, persuasive, and scientifically rigorous narratives for diverse audiences.
  • Strong scientific reasoning and the ability to interpret complex data, identify meaningful insights, and translate them into practical communication strategies.
  • Proven experience managing multiple projects, accounts, and deadlines while maintaining high standards of quality and accuracy in a fast-moving environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and collaboration skills, with the ability to guide medical writers and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong client-facing skills, including the ability to build trust, communicate recommendations clearly, and provide strategic counsel.
  • Adaptability, resilience, resourcefulness, and a solutions-oriented mindset when priorities or project requirements change.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, online proofing platforms such as Workfront Proof or Ziflow, and Veeva Vault.
  • Familiarity with AI-powered tools and resources for research and content development, with the judgment to use them efficiently and responsibly.
  • Willingness and ability to work Eastern U.S. hours.
