Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

POSITION PURPOSE

Responsible for (including but not limited to) the effective management and execution of small to medium engineering projects. Responsibilities will include developing Project Charters, AFE’s, Scope of Work documents, project forecasts, monitor project spending, hosting technical presentations, and assist Project Managers through the construction process. Demonstrate an understanding of the Project Management Process, the ability to read engineering drawings, review technical documents, and ensure appropriate adjustments are made to best suit Pinto Valley. This position will be expected to host bid presentations, evaluate bid submittals, facilitate meetings with internal and external stakeholders, review and fully understand project design as an Electrical Subject Matter Expert to ensure goals and KPI’s for HSEC, Production, Maintenance, Quality and Cost are achieved for Pinto Valley. The position will also provide timely and accurate reporting as required.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Exemplify the Capstone Copper Values in all efforts and interactions while working in compliance with all MSHA safety guidelines and Pinto Valley Mine policies and procedures.
  • Manage and ensure that all employees and contractors are certified to execute the tasks/jobs they are assigned.
  • Develop electrical engineering solutions from feasibility to design for assigned projects. Will need to communicate with end user and/or Project Manager to determine scope of project and update them as needed with design considerations.
  • Perform bid walks with contractors, help to analyze bids, and provide recommendations for bid awards.
  • Document engineering plans via CAD programs and specification documents. Help produce documents for competitive bidding process and execution. Conduct project bid meetings with procurement.
  • Provide project management and electrical support for capital projects as assigned.
  • Provide oversight of engineering efforts of assigned projects. Interact with work force and contractors to ensure compliance to safety, electrical and environmental standards. Conduct regular updates on project status compared to schedule and provide direction accordingly. Monitor engineering work performed to ensure adherence to design and specification and provide direct and written feedback to contractors. This includes quality control and quality assurance technical responsibilities. Responsibilities may also include electrical support for other engineers in department.
  • Develop an understanding of contracts, subcontracts, purchase order agreements as well as contract drawings and specifications. Administers elements of the process involved in budgeting and controlling costs so that the project can be completed within the approved budget.
  • Prepare and review change orders, including time extensions, with the appropriate personnel prior to project being completed.
  • Maintain and expand the engineering documentation system. This includes working with the senior drafter on organizing new documents into the system, maintaining proper edit permissions, and supporting the use of all functions within the system. Maintain condition of physical files and document integrity.
  • Support modification of the existing and new documents to current or as-built status via CAD and PDF editors. Support internal and external personnel in searching for documentation. Support standardization efforts of internal and external drawings and documentation.
  • Provide verbal and written updates on project status to supervisor and plant leadership.
  • Support development of the annual budget and updates to the budget by obtaining budgetary proposals for projects in a timely fashion.
  • Research alternatives to current facilities maintenance practices including materials updates and execution methods to improve performance and lower cost.
  • Responsible for but not limited to all tasks/duties assigned or required.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering Technology
  • 7+ years of experience in Project Engineer or related position

Preferred:

  • Mining experience preferred
  • EIT Certification
  • PE Certification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES (KSA):

  • 3+ years Power Distribution Experience
  • Instrumentation/PLC/Comms experience
  • Knowledge of Electrical codes, standards, etc.
  • Technical report writing skills.
  • SAP experience or demonstrate ability to learn and use SAP.
  • Good networking skills and ability to communicate with outside resources to gather needed information.
  • Ability to organize and conduct meetings inside and outside the department.
  • Able to speak, comprehend, read, and write English.
  • Experience and competence with Microsoft Office Suite including Project, Visio, Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Ability to work with diverse teams that include internal and external resources; equipment contractors; and others such as architects and Engineering firms when required.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated expertise in the management of schedules and budgets.
  • ETAP or similar experience using modeling software for distribution and protection/load flow/sizing equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in mill, mine, concentrator, and tailings environments
Combination of office and field work, with approximately 80% field exposure and 20% office work
Regular walking on uneven ground and industrial surfaces
Frequent climbing of stairs and access structures
Exposure to noise, dust, vibration, heat, and changing weather conditions
Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in operational areas
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during inspections and operational oversight activities

All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty’. Additional training and/or testing may be required.
