Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer based in India.
This is a high-ownership engineering role focused on modernizing large-scale software systems while keeping production environments stable and reliable. You will work hands-on across backend services, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and production operations. A key part of the role is incrementally transforming legacy monoliths into scalable, well-bounded services using proven modernization patterns. You will have significant influence over technical direction, architecture, reliability, and engineering practices. The environment values proactive problem-solving, strong technical judgment, and ownership from design through deployment and operations. You will also have the opportunity to use AI-augmented development tools to accelerate engineering, modernization, and problem-solving.
Lead and evolve incremental modernization initiatives, safely transitioning legacy systems into scalable, well-bounded services while maintaining reliability and continuity.
Decompose monolithic applications using approaches such as the strangler fig pattern, phased rollouts, and parallel-running systems.
Define clear service boundaries, API contracts, and data ownership models as systems evolve.
Manage the coexistence of legacy and modern systems throughout migration programs.
Maintain backward compatibility and ensure the safe evolution of APIs, services, and data models.
Identify and prioritize modernization opportunities based on business value, technical risk, system impact, and operational complexity.
Improve system performance, scalability, maintainability, and reliability throughout modernization efforts.
Design, build, test, deploy, and operate production software with a strong sense of end-to-end ownership.
Debug and validate behavior across legacy systems and newly extracted services.
Use observability and production data to validate migrations, identify issues, and continuously improve system reliability.
Participate in incident response and a 24/7 on-call rotation when required.
Apply AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully to analyze legacy code, understand system behavior, accelerate refactoring, and improve engineering productivity.
4+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated ownership of production systems and operational improvements.
Strong backend development experience with Ruby, Node.js, or a comparable technology.
Hands-on experience modernizing monolithic systems incrementally in production environments.
Practical knowledge of modernization strategies such as strangler fig, parallel runs, phased migrations, or similar approaches.
Strong understanding of system decomposition, service boundaries, distributed systems, data ownership, REST APIs, and service contracts.
Experience evolving legacy systems under real-world production constraints while balancing migration speed, stability, and risk.
Proven ability to maintain backward compatibility and safely manage API and data contracts during system evolution.
Experience building and operating cloud-native services on AWS.
Familiarity with CI/CD practices and modern deployment workflows.
Strong automated testing experience across unit, integration, and API layers, with a focus on code quality, debugging, and validation.
Experience with observability platforms such as Datadog or equivalent tools for monitoring and troubleshooting production systems.
Familiarity with incident response, production support, and continuous reliability improvements.
Willingness to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation and support the resolution of production incidents.
Experience with, or strong interest in, AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or Cursor, along with the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated solutions.
Strong ownership, technical judgment, problem-solving ability, and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving engineering challenges.
Ability to operate as a T-shaped engineer, combining deep expertise in a primary technical domain with the ability to work effectively across backend systems, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and operations.
Fully remote work from India.
Opportunity to work on complex, large-scale systems and meaningful modernization initiatives.
High level of technical ownership and influence over architecture, engineering practices, and system reliability.
Exposure to modern cloud-native technologies, production engineering, and AI-augmented development.
Opportunity to work across the full software lifecycle, from design and implementation through deployment, observability, and operations.
Collaborative environment with opportunities for continued technical learning and career growth.
Experience working on products and systems serving a broad enterprise customer base.
Equal opportunity workplace committed to a professional environment free from discrimination and harassment.
