EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
• Five years of experience in research administration
• Strong knowledge of federal regulations governing academic medical center research.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in a research, regulatory, or academic medical center environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in research administration, public health, regulatory affairs, or related field.
• Certification such as CIP, CCRP, CRA or equivalent

Job Summary

Provides strategic, operational, and compliance leadership for research activities within an academic medical center, including human subjects and/or animals. Serves as a primary source of expertise, training, and education in matters relating to government regulation of internal and externally funded research to the UTMB research community on behalf of the research administration offices. This role ensures that research involving human participants and animals is conducted in accordance with federal regulations, institutional policies, accreditation standards, and ethical principles.

Job Duties:

• Manages and monitors daily activities of sponsored program specialists, clinical trial specialists, accountants, financial analysts, and supporting staff.
• Assists the Associate Dean of Research through building a sustainable research platform within the School of Health Profession that involves intensive mentoring of junior faculty, opportunity identification, and the submission of proposals for extramurally funded research.
• Advises staff in consulting with Principal Investigators and departmental administrators on fiscal responsibilities and project timelines.
• Ensures specialists and financial staff are knowledgeable on a diverse range and types of awards, as well as the general terms and conditions for proper grant administration, and the structure and practices of various sources of research grant funding.
• Oversees financial management of all active accounts for clinical research, including accurate distribution of payments from sponsors, and review and authorization of expenses.
• Acts as a problem-solving resource for staff to ensure optimal service to the research community and accurate compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies.
• Acts as a liaison between the center/department, and university administrative department(s), for faculty, student and staff professional development activities related to proposal development and submission.
• Meet regularly with research service department and Office of Sponsored Programs directors to facilitate and foster collaborative research networks .
• Identify research alliances with potential collaborative partners and funding agencies to formulate and implement specific research projects.
• Evaluate the performance of specialist and financial staff by providing timely feedback and coaching. Manages time and attendance matters within office.
• Conduct-regular meetings to ensure timely milestone achievement.
• Monitors workflow and assignment of duties and adjusts as needed for optimal productivity.
• Responsible for hiring, corrective action, annual performance evaluation and professional development of staff. Performs other duties as assigned by directors.
• Adheres to internal controls established for1redepartment.

Salary Range:
$79,385 to $103,200, Commensurate with experience
