Job Description

TITLE: Heavy Equipment Mechanic

EMPLOYER: RIRRC

DEPARTMENT: Garage

REPORTS TO: Maintenance Manager

EFFECTIVE DATE: 10/01/2026

SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for providing major, minor, and preventative maintenance repairs on vehicle and heavy equipment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs repair or preventative maintenance on electrical, diesel and gasoline vehicles, including compactor, excavator, wheel loader, and other vehicles; typical repairs and maintenance would include work on engines, transmissions, chassis, drivelines, and components such as hydraulic systems, air, wet and dry brake systems, electrical, wheels, tires and undercarriages.
  • Conducts diagnostics and troubleshooting of equipment systems.
  • Completes major repair tasks including engine and transmission replacements, final drive rebuild, undercarriage replacement, and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Learn and troubleshoot Tier 4 emission systems.
  • Performs quarterly landfill equipment inspections and cleaning.
  • Inspects machines uses OEM and RIRRC maintenance checklist, repair or report any issues.
  • Tests drive and/or inspects vehicles for wear, damage, or specific problems affective performance.
  • Performs engine tune ups, including diagnosing items in need of repair, replacement, or adjustment; makes repairs as necessary.
  • Oversees vendor service and repair orders.
  • Demonstrates continual effort to improve operations, reduces turnaround times, streamline work processes, and works cooperatively to provide quality customer service.
  • Attends prescheduled off-site training that may require travel and overnight stay.
  • Works safely without presenting a threat or others and maintains good housekeeping and clean-as-you-go practices.
  • Completes paperwork associated with repairing equipment, parts usage, and accounting for time in repairs, in a timely manner.
  • Operates various hand tools and equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Performs light welding and fabrication.
  • Follows and contributes to health and safety procedures and follows requirements for equipment Lock Out Tag Out.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

    • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

    • QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma and 5 years of trade school training and/or equivalent experience.
  • Certificates, licenses and registrations required:
  • Must be able to obtain OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety within 12 months of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain Hoisting Engineers restricted endorsement 204 excavating equipment or equivalent within six months and maintain throughout employment.
  • Possess a current, valid driver’s license.


  • Computer skills required:
  • Database Software;
  • Electronic Mail Software (Outlook);


  • Other skills required:
  • A minimum of five years related experience or trade school.
  • Read and interpret manuals and schematics.
  • Experience with heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Use independent judgment in performing duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Read, write, and speak English.
  • Perform intermediate math addition, subtraction, division, multiplication with decimals and fractions.
  • Ability to install heavy equipment accessories.
  • Basic computer and keyboarding knowledge to enter and extract data and maintain records.
  • Must provide own tools.
  • Must be available to work overtime as needed.

    • Frequently works around fumes, airborne particles, or toxic chemicals.

    • Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.

    • Occasionally exposed to extreme heat or cold (non-weather).

    • Occasionally exposed to bloodborne and airborne pathogens or infectious materials.

    • While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

    • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
