SUMMARY

The Data Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, supporting, and maintaining Greenleaf Trust's enterprise data platform. This includes database development, data warehousing, data integration, data movement, and data platform administration.

The Data Engineer works closely with Business Information Services (BIS) team members, system administrators, business stakeholders, consultants, and vendors to deliver reliable, secure, and scalable data solutions. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining data pipelines, integrating internal and external systems, administering enterprise data environments, and supporting the organization's transition to modern cloud-based technologies including Microsoft Fabric and data lake architectures.

YOUR ROLE IN SERVING OUR CLIENTS AND ASSISTING DIVISIONS INCLUDES:

Data Platform Development

• Design, develop, and maintain SQL databases, data warehouse, and related data structures.

• Develop and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, views, and database objects.

• Support the ongoing administration, maintenance, and performance tuning of enterprise database environments.

• Design and implement scalable data models to support operational and analytical workloads.

• Monitor and troubleshoot database performance, availability, and reliability issues.

Data Integration & Engineering

• Design, develop, and maintain ETL/ELT processes and data pipelines.

• Support data movement between internal and external systems using APIs, middleware, file transfers, and integration platforms.

• Develop and maintain automated processes for importing, exporting, transforming, and validating data.

• Troubleshoot and resolve data integration issues.

• Participate in data migration, conversion, and modernization initiatives.

Modern Data Platform Support

• Assist in the implementation, administration, and support of Microsoft Fabric solutions.

• Support the development and maintenance of enterprise data lake and lakehouse environments.

• Work with consulting partners to learn and assume ownership of modern data platform administration and support.

• Participate in the evaluation and implementation of emerging data technologies and best practices.

• Contribute to future-state architecture supporting analytics, automation, and artificial intelligence initiatives.

• Support the development and maintenance of enterprise ontologies, semantic models, and business definitions that improve data consistency, discoverability, and AI readiness. Business Collaboration

• Partner with business stakeholders and Business Analysts to understand data requirements.

• Translate business requirements into technical database and integration solutions.

• Participate in project planning, solution design, testing, and implementation activities.

• Provide technical recommendations related to data architecture, integration approaches, and platform capabilities.

• Support users in resolving data-related issues and service requests.

Governance, Security & Documentation

• Support data governance, metadata management, and data quality initiatives.

• Develop and maintain technical documentation, diagrams, procedures, and operational standards.

• Ensure compliance with information security, privacy, and regulatory requirements.

• Participate in project management and change management processes.

• Incorporate security considerations into all technical designs and solutions.

Continuous Improvement

• Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve operational efficiency.

• Support CI/CD, version control, automated testing, and reliable deployment practices.

• Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend platform enhancements.

• Participate in knowledge transfer activities and technical cross-training.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• 2-5 years of experience in data engineering, database development, data warehousing, or related technical roles.

• Experience developing solutions in Microsoft SQL Server environments including SQL Server Integration Services.

• Experience creating and supporting data integration processes.

• Experience working with data warehouses, dimensional models, and relational databases.

• Experience gathering and translating business requirements into technical solutions.

• Experience with Python or other scripting languages.

• Advanced SQL development skills.

• Strong understanding of relational database concepts.

• Knowledge of data warehousing and dimensional modeling principles.

• Knowledge of DevOps, source control, and deployment processes preferred.

• Regular and predictable attendance in the Kalamazoo, Michigan office is required.

• Our normal operating hours are Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some after-hours time required for implementations and troubleshooting as needed.
