Job Description

Senior Civil Site Grading Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Civil Site Grading Engineer based in the United States.

This remote engineering role provides senior-level technical leadership for civil site grading and design across complex utility substation projects.
You’ll lead the development and review of grading, drainage, earthwork, erosion control, and related civil engineering deliverables.
The position spans projects of varying sizes, complexities, and voltage classes across transmission and distribution substations.
You’ll collaborate closely with engineers, designers, project managers, clients, survey teams, geotechnical specialists, and external stakeholders.
A major focus is improving engineering quality and delivery through automation, reusable tools, standards, and scalable workflows.
The role also provides opportunities to mentor engineering teams, support business development, and influence departmental technical standards.
This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced civil engineer who enjoys technical leadership, innovation, and complex infrastructure projects.

Accountabilities
  • Lead and provide technical oversight for civil site grading and engineering services supporting utility substation projects across the United States.

  • Develop and review grading plans, drainage plans, erosion and sediment control plans, site layouts, road and yard sections, profiles, construction details, specifications, and earthwork quantity summaries.

  • Use Autodesk Civil 3D for surface modeling, grading, corridor and road modeling, pipe networks, earthwork calculations, and civil design deliverables.

  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for site drainage, detention and retention facilities, culverts, ditches, and floodplain evaluations.

  • Design and coordinate site grading, earthwork, stormwater management, erosion control, access roads, retaining walls, surfacing, oil containment, and related site infrastructure.

  • Prepare and support permitting documentation, including NPDES/SWPPP, local grading and stormwater permits, floodplain and wetland coordination, and responses to regulatory comments.

  • Coordinate with survey and geotechnical teams regarding site conditions, topographic information, soil suitability, groundwater, subgrade preparation, compaction, and fill requirements.

  • Coordinate civil design interfaces with electrical, structural, grounding, foundation, conduit, duct bank, fencing, and equipment layout disciplines.

  • Act as project lead or independent technical reviewer while supporting project planning, execution, schedules, estimates, proposals, and scope development.

  • Lead, mentor, and support engineers and designers, providing technical guidance, quality feedback, and development opportunities.

  • Establish and continuously improve engineering standards, design criteria, calculation templates, drawing standards, review procedures, and departmental quality expectations.

  • Develop and champion design automation, parametric modeling, scripting, data-driven quality checks, reusable tools, and workflow improvements that increase efficiency and scalability.

  • Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, consistency, constructability, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.

  • Provide technical support to clients and participate in client meetings, jurisdictional coordination, business development, and marketing initiatives.

  • Provide construction-phase support, including RFI responses, submittal reviews, field change coordination, record drawings, constructability reviews, and site observations.

  • Conduct periodic field visits for site walkdowns, construction support, earthwork and erosion control observations, and other project-related activities.

  • Work closely with project management to develop project plans, monitor progress, and communicate project updates.

  • Support additional technical initiatives, including 3D modeling, engineering automation, reusable design resources, and professional technical committees.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution, or a related field with equivalent professional experience; a master’s degree may contribute toward experience requirements.

  • 7+ years of relevant civil engineering experience for Senior Engineer I-level responsibilities, with higher experience requirements applying to more senior levels.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is strongly preferred and required for Senior Engineer I, II, and III classifications.

  • Demonstrated experience creating and reviewing civil site grading and related design drawings.

  • Strong proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D, including surface modeling, grading design, corridor and road modeling, pipe networks, and earthwork calculations.

  • Knowledge of applicable civil engineering codes, standards, permitting requirements, and design practices.

  • Experience with substation civil/site design, including grading, drainage, stormwater, erosion control, roads, earthwork, and related infrastructure; utility industry experience is preferred.

  • Strong understanding of hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, drainage design, floodplain evaluation, and stormwater management.

  • Demonstrated interest or experience in engineering technology, including design automation, parametric modeling, scripting, data-driven quality control, or workflow optimization.

  • Exceptional analytical, technical decision-making, organization, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple complex assignments and competing priorities while delivering accurate work on schedule.

  • Proven ability to lead teams, delegate assignments, mentor staff, and drive positive project outcomes.

  • Strong communication, client relationship, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with geographically distributed and remote teams.

  • Strong interest in continuous improvement, engineering quality, innovation, and scalable delivery processes.

  • Ability to pass required post-offer drug and alcohol testing and participate in random testing as applicable.

  • Ability to travel periodically for project site visits, construction support, and other business needs.

Benefits
  • Annual salary range of $120,000–$200,000, depending on experience, qualifications, and location.

  • Fully remote position for U.S.-based candidates.

  • Medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.

  • 401(k) retirement savings plan.

  • Supplemental insurance options.

  • Company-paid life and AD&D insurance.

  • Company-paid short-term disability coverage.

  • Generous paid time off program.

  • Career advancement and professional development opportunities.

  • Opportunity to work on complex utility and infrastructure projects across the United States.

  • Exposure to engineering automation, innovative design workflows, and cross-disciplinary technical collaboration.

  • Compensation may vary based on market conditions, candidate qualifications, experience, and location.
