Hawaiʻi Island Community Health Center (HICHC) is seeking a dependable and motivated Maintenance Technician I to help maintain our facilities and support our mission of providing quality healthcare to our communities. This position plays a key role in ensuring our clinics and administrative facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming for patients, staff, and visitors.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on professional with facility maintenance experience who can work independently, troubleshoot problems, and perform a variety of building maintenance tasks.

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Vice President of Facilities and the direct supervision of the Director of Facilities, the Maintenance Technician I performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties related to the maintenance and repair of HICHC buildings, grounds, equipment, and systems. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, electrical repairs, facility inspections, and inter-facility mail and supply deliveries.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance on HICHC facilities and maintain maintenance records.
  • Complete minor building repairs and alterations while ensuring compliance with applicable building codes.
  • Repair and install doors, windows, locks, flooring, cabinets, partitions, shelving, furniture, and related equipment.
  • Perform semi-skilled electrical work, including troubleshooting and repairing lighting fixtures, receptacles, switches, wiring, and conduits.
  • Conduct carpentry projects and safely operate hand tools and power equipment.
  • Perform plumbing repairs and maintenance on fixtures, water systems, and related equipment.
  • Assist with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) maintenance and repairs.
  • Conduct routine inspections of fire extinguishers and fire alarm systems.
  • Identify facility issues and communicate repair needs to the Director of Facilities.
  • Order and maintain supplies and equipment necessary for maintenance operations.
  • Schedule and follow up on routine maintenance requests.
  • Move, reconfigure, transport, and store furniture, supplies, equipment, and files.
  • Perform pest control activities and apply approved treatments when appropriate.
  • Follow and promote workplace safety practices and procedures.
  • Securely transport inter-facility mail, supplies, and materials on designated routes.
  • Support HICHC's Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model of care.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required QualificationsEducation
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years of facility maintenance, building maintenance, or related experience required.
Licenses
  • Valid Hawaiʻi Driver's License required.
  • Current automobile insurance required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Specialized training or experience in HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical maintenance.
  • Experience working in healthcare, medical, or multi-site facilities.
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and facility safety standards.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of building maintenance methods, equipment, and safety practices.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to safely use various maintenance tools and equipment.
Additional Requirements
  • Must provide a satisfactory annual traffic abstract.
  • Must successfully pass random employee drug testing.
  • Ability to travel between HICHC locations as needed.
  • Ability to lift, carry, move, and position equipment and supplies associated with maintenance activities.
