About the OpportunityMED-EL is seeking a Surgical Account Manager for our Midwest Sales Region, with a primary focus on the Detroit, Michigan market.
This is a highly visible, field-based role combining medical device sales, strategic account management, and hands-on surgical support. You’ll develop strong relationships with surgeons, audiologists, hospital teams, and other healthcare professionals while driving sales growth and supporting MED-EL hearing implant procedures throughout the region.
This is a travel-intensive position requiring 50% or more travel. Candidates should be comfortable regularly traveling to customer accounts, hospitals, surgical cases, meetings, and events throughout the territory, with occasional travel outside the region.
What You’ll DoDrive Growth Across the Midwest- Own and develop customer relationships across the Midwest sales territory, with a strong focus on the Detroit market.
- Achieve assigned sales goals while effectively managing budgetary responsibilities.
- Identify and develop new business opportunities that contribute to regional sales growth.
- Develop and execute account strategies in partnership with the Regional Director and Midwest regional team.
- Build trusted relationships with surgeons, audiologists, operating room teams, hospital leadership, purchasing departments, and other key decision-makers.
- Develop a thorough understanding of purchasing and decision-making processes within assigned hospitals and healthcare systems.
- Support pricing and purchase agreement discussions while maintaining knowledge of relevant market trends, competitive pricing, and discounting practices.
- Partner with MED-EL Finance, Reimbursement, Operations, and other internal teams to support the financial performance and growth of the region.
- Provide hands-on support for hearing implant surgical procedures throughout the Midwest territory.
- Serve as an expert resource to surgeons and operating room teams regarding MED-EL products, technology, instrumentation, and surgical applications.
- Provide product demonstrations and training to surgeons, audiologists, OR personnel, physicians-in-training, and other healthcare professionals.
- Support intraoperative implant electrical evaluation and basic Auditory Response Telemetry (ART).
- Develop and maintain expertise in relevant anatomy, hearing conditions, implant indications and contraindications, surgical approaches, and emerging technologies.
- Maintain strong working knowledge of surgical approaches for hearing implants and the surgical differences between competing devices.
- Support complex implant procedures, including unusual anatomy and revision cases, following appropriate training.
- Assist customers with appropriate implant and electrode selection and help ensure timely ordering and product delivery.
- Coordinate appropriate surgical case coverage when unable to personally attend.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of assigned hospitals, clinics, and surgical facilities, including their operating room, purchasing, finance, materials management, security, and vendor management processes.
- Maintain accurate account, contact, market share, activity, and relationship information within the company CRM.
- Gather market intelligence and account data to support Midwest territory planning and growth strategies.
- Establish and monitor account-specific sales goals in partnership with the Regional Director.
- Work closely with Customer Service, Reimbursement, Operations, Finance, and regional teammates to deliver a high-quality customer experience.
- Maintain necessary vendor credentials and comply with applicable hospital, healthcare facility, and regulatory requirements.
- Manage device and consignment inventory as needed, including monitoring sterile device and instrumentation dates when supporting surgical cases.
- Complete required sales activity, expense reports, CRM documentation, and other business reporting accurately and on time.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a field related to:
- Surgical or clinical support for otologists, neurotologists, operating room staff, or related healthcare professionals; or
- Hearing disorders, hearing healthcare, audiology, or a related discipline.
- Ability to develop credible, professional relationships with surgeons and other healthcare professionals.
- Comfort working in operating room and other clinical environments.
- Commercial mindset with the ability to balance sales objectives with expert clinical and surgical support.
- Ability to independently manage multiple accounts and priorities across a geographically dispersed territory.
- Ability to occasionally travel outside the assigned region as business needs require.
- Master’s degree or higher in Audiology or a related surgical/clinical discipline.
- ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) or comparable clinical credentials.
- Previous experience in medical device sales, surgical support, hearing implants, audiology, or account management.
- Experience working directly with surgeons, operating room teams, hospitals, or healthcare systems.
- Previous experience developing or managing a multi-market sales territory.
