Job Description

Ingnieur lectrique Poste lectrique - Electrical Substation Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Ingénieur Électrique Poste Électrique – Electrical Substation Engineer based in Canada.

This role is responsible for the detailed technical execution of high-voltage and extra-high-voltage substation engineering projects. You will lead the physical and primary design of complex substations, from single-line diagrams and equipment layouts through detailed calculations and construction-ready documentation. The position combines hands-on engineering expertise with technical leadership, quality oversight, and multidisciplinary coordination. You will work closely with engineers, designers, project managers, procurement teams, and protection and control specialists to deliver safe, constructible, and cost-effective solutions. As a licensed professional engineer, you may also act as the responsible engineer and seal completed engineering documents. This is a remote opportunity in Canada with occasional travel to factories and project sites.

Accountabilities
  • Lead the development of HV/EHV power single-line diagrams and the physical design and layout of outdoor substations, including plans, elevations, high-voltage bus and cable arrangements, equipment, conduits, wiring, grounding systems, and control buildings.
  • Perform or oversee relevant engineering studies, design calculations, equipment sizing, and the development of detailed bills of materials.
  • Prepare high-voltage equipment specifications, material purchase requests, and vendor quotation evaluations for circuit breakers, switchgear, disconnectors, power transformers, capacitors, high-voltage cables, and other substation equipment.
  • Develop scopes of work, deliverables, and schedules for subcontracted engineering and design activities and oversee their successful execution.
  • Take responsibility for the quality and technical integrity of personal and team deliverables while following established engineering and quality procedures.
  • Direct engineers, designers, and drafting personnel while coordinating with procurement and project teams to meet technical specifications, cost targets, and project schedules.
  • Collaborate effectively with principal engineers, protection and control engineers, civil and structural engineers, electrical designers, drafters, project managers, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support engineering schedules and monitor deliverables against key performance indicators, including on-time delivery and Say Do Ratio targets.
  • Lead design reviews and stage-gate reviews, identifying and resolving technical issues before they affect project execution.
  • Support proposals by preparing or reviewing technical specifications, estimating engineering hours and materials, supporting vendor quotation activities, defining drawing requirements, and preparing technical clarifications, exceptions, and responses.
  • Ensure designs prioritize field constructability, operational requirements, quality, and site safety.
  • Review engineering packages and provide senior technical oversight to resolve design conflicts and maintain the integrity of final deliverables.
  • Travel to factories and project sites as required, up to approximately 20% of the time.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in high-voltage and extra-high-voltage substation physical design and layout, preferably within engineering consulting or design firms.
  • Active Professional Engineering license, such as P.Eng. in Ontario or OIQ in Quebec, with authorization and willingness to act as the responsible engineer and seal engineering documents.
  • Hands-on ability to perform engineering design calculations, supervise drafting teams, and issue Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings.
  • Strong experience with high-voltage substation engineering, particularly outdoor physical layout and primary design.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD; experience with 3D CAD or BIM software is an asset.
  • Experience with both GIS and AIS substation designs.
  • Strong knowledge of substation equipment selection and engineering calculations, including busbar and conductor sizing, circuit breakers, transformers, insulators, grounding systems, and lightning protection.
  • Knowledge of load-flow studies, short-circuit calculations, and insulation coordination.
  • Direct experience with HVDC and FACTS installations is highly desirable, particularly for complex projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, IEC, and CSA standards, with the ability to develop technically sound designs when client specifications are incomplete.
  • Understanding of field constructability and safety considerations, with a focus on designing solutions suitable for successful site execution.
  • Ability to act as a senior technical reviewer, resolve design conflicts, and ensure engineering package integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and coordinate directly with civil, structural, protection, and control engineering disciplines.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills.
  • Bilingual English and French communication skills, with at least intermediate proficiency in French.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% of the time for factory and project site visits.

Benefits:

  • Annual salary range of $105,300–$155,300 CAD.
  • Compensation may vary based on experience, education, skills, and other relevant factors.
  • Eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus.
  • Fully remote position in Canada.
  • Relocation assistance provided.
  • Opportunity to work on complex HV/EHV substation projects with significant technical responsibility.
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary engineering, procurement, project management, and technical teams.
  • Opportunity to contribute to critical electrical infrastructure and grid modernization projects.
