Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW (non-exempt):

Assist with care of patients of all ages in the emergency department in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

Under close supervision, provides technical support for providers and licensed nurses in the emergency department.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous health care experience beneficial.
  • CNA or EMT preferred but not required.
  • Mandatory Reporter & BCLS as required.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Demonstrate behavior consistent with JCHC mission, vision, values, and standards of performance.

Reports to Emergency/Education Director

DIRECT REPORTS:

None

POSITION-SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Assists in care of patients as directed under direct supervision of provider and/or licensed nurses. May include but not be limited to; assist providers/nurses during examination/treatment/procedures of patients, obtain vital signs, obtaining point of care glucose, mobility assistance, specimen collection, accurate intake/output, EKGs and other duties supporting optimizing patient care.
  • Work effectively within role independently and with other team members.
  • Assist in identifying quality improvement opportunities and demonstrate support for changes in practice to improve performance.
  • Organize and prioritize daily work, considering the needs of patients, families, and other health care workers.
  • Demonstrate effective and age-appropriate communication as well as the ability to understand the needs of the patient including non-verbal communication, fears, anxieties, and language/cultural barriers.
  • Knowledge of basic emergency patient care practices.
  • Ability to recognize and report patient condition changes
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Observe and communicate to the licensed nurse any changes in patient condition and pertinent, accurate information regarding the needs of the patient and/or significant others.
  • Maintain a safe, clean environment.
  • Intentional Rounding
  • Implement actions safely and consistently with the plan of care.
  • Complete and accurate electronic documentation.
  • Prepare ER rooms for care and treatment.
  • Maintain and obtain supplies and equipment as needed. Cleans and decontaminates instruments and equipment after use.
  • Transport patients to and from clinical, ancillary and support department areas as directed by the licensed nurse and/or provider.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and retain a positive, friendly and courteous attitude to all patients and coworkers.
  • Report any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies.
  • Acts as liaison between providers, care team, the patient, and the family. Serves as patient advocate, as necessary.
  • Attends all required meetings and in-services.
  • Other duties as directed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works in a well-illuminated, climate-controlled environment
  • May come in contact with hazardous chemical or treatment modalities
  • Possibility exists of exposure to communicable diseases
  • Involvement in inpatient care may result in unavoidable work-related illness or injury
  • Work environment is comfortable, with minimal exposure to physical hazards
  • Moderate to loud noise environment when machines/equipment in use
  • Involvement in checking in/moving of supplies may result in unavoidable work-related injury
  • Must be constantly alert for patient/family emergency situations
