Job Description

Position Summary:The Student Coach (SC) is a near–peer college mentor position designed for students who are passionate about making a meaningful impact in schools and communities. Student Coaches are placed directly inside partner schools where they serve as positive role models, mentors, and leaders who support student success through relationship–building, engagement, and leadership development.
The role focuses on helping students remain engaged in school, overcome barriers to success, and develop the confidence, skills, and mindset needed for long-term success. Student Coaches actively build relationships with students, support academic engagement, and assist in delivering core program experiences, including mentoring, leadership programming, and student engagement events aligned with the mission of the N.A.C.
Duties/ Responsibilities
  1. Build authentic, positive relationships with students through daily interactions and engagement across the school environment (hallways, cafeteria, classrooms, and events).
  2. Serve as a consistent, approachable, and supportive mentor and role model to students.
  3. Engage students in conversations to understand their interests, challenges, and goals, using a structured mentorship approach (Connect, Ask, Respond, Empower).
  4. Identify students who may need additional support and communicate with program staff to ensure appropriate follow–up and intervention.
  5. Assist in supporting student success by encouraging positive attendance, behavior, and engagement in school.
  6. Help connect students to resources and support systems when needed, under the guidance of full-time staff.
  7. Support the planning and facilitation of student programs including:
    • N.A.C. Connect engagement events
    • Champions leadership development groups
    • School–based activities and special events.
  8. Encourage student participation in leadership opportunities, service activities, and personal development experiences.
  9. Collaborate with school staff and N.A.C. team members to support a positive and inclusive school environment.
  10. Maintain professionalism, appropriate boundaries, and confidentiality when working with students.
  11. Attend required training sessions, team meetings, and program events.
  12. All other duties as assigned.

Student Coaches play a vital role in creating a supportive school environment where students feel seen, valued, and empowered. Through consistent presence, mentorship, and leadership, Student Coaches directly contribute to improving student engagement, building confidence, and helping students stay on track for success in school and beyond.

Program Commitments and ExpectationsStudent Coaches are expected to fulfill the following weekly and program–wide commitments: School-Based Engagement
  • Attend and participate on campus 2 -3 days per week
  • Support academic tutoring, relationship- building, and student engagement
  • Estimated Time Commitment – 6 Hours per week
N.A.C. Impact (Weekly program)
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly N.A.C. Impact sessions
  • Support student engagement, small group interaction, and program facilitation.
  • Estimated Time Commitment – 3 – 4 Hours per week
Champions Leadership Program
  • Attend and support at least 2 Champions sessions per month
  • Assist in mentoring and developing student leaders
N.A.C. Nation Retreat (Required)
  • Participate in the summer week–long N.A.C. Nation student retreat
  • Participate in the fall weekend N.A.C. Nation student retreat
  • Participate in the weekend Leadership retreat
  • Serve as a mentor and leader throughout the experience
  • Cost: Covered by the program (no cost to Student Coach)
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Currently enrolled college student (preferred majors: education, social work, psychology, human services, or related fields; all majors welcome).
  • Passion for working with youth and serving the community
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build relationships with diverse populations
  • Reliable, responsible, and professional
  • Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule
  • Ability to pass CJIS Background Check
Preferred Skills
  • Mentoring, tutoring, coaching, or volunteering with youth
  • Leadership roles in school, athletics, or community programs
  • Experience working in diverse or underserved communities.
