Job Description
The Crew Chief leads a Survey Crew of two-three (2-3) members and oversees all field procedures related to land surveying. By accurately interpreting the instructions provided by the Field Crew Manager, the Crew Chief ensures the timely, accurate, and efficient completion of assigned tasks.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Survey Leadership and Oversight:
- Supervises and leads a Field Crew of two-three (2–3) members.
- Interprets and executes field tasks based on instructions from the Field Coordinator and RPLS.
- Ensures all tasks are performed accurately and efficiently.
- Oversees all duties carried out by Crew members and ensures adherence to company standards.
- Conducts safety meetings and maintains a safe work environment.
Technical Execution and Field Operations:
- Reads and accurately interprets engineering plans and drawings.
- Sets horizontal and vertical control points, as well as benchmarks.
- Runs and adjusts level circuits to ensure tight closure tolerances.
- Collects, evaluates, and documents as-built data.
- Provides thorough and accurate sketches when necessary and uses media to record and document specific details.
- Produces clear, legible, and accurate field notes.
Instrument and Equipment Management:
- Operates GPS, robotic total stations, levels, and other required survey instruments proficiently.
- Maintains awareness of equipment status and communicates any technical issues promptly.
- Ensures that survey equipment is cared for properly and used according to best practices.
Team Management and Training:
- Mentors and trains Instrument Men and Field Assistants on company procedures and standards.
- Delegates daily tasks and responsibilities to Crew members effectively.
- Ensures proper performance and quality control of all Crew activities.
- Provides real-time coaching and support to help team members develop their skills.
Additional Duties:
- Possesses general knowledge of legal descriptions related to plats, right-of-way documents, and record of surveys.
- Performs physical fieldwork when necessary, including driving hubs and lath.
- Solves problems and make decisions independently with minimal supervision.

- Maintains a high level of accuracy, efficiency, and professionalism in all field documentation and communications.
- Leads by example and fosters a positive, productive team environment.
- Displays initiative and ownership over assigned tasks and crew performance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Possesses valid driver’s license.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- 5+ years of experience as a Topographic Survey and Boundary Crew Chief.
- Two-three (2-3) years of Trimble Access experience preferred.
- Comprehensive knowledge of topographic surveys.
- Dependable and reliable work ethic.
- Ability to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Bilingual proficiency is a plus.
- Proficient in operating levels, GPS, robotic total stations, and other survey instruments.
- Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
