Description:

Use Your Engineering Skills to Solve Real-World Problems in Marine Manufacturing

Boater's World Manufacturing Group is seeking a technically skilled, customer-focused Mechanical Engineer – Marine Technical & Customer Support to join our growing boat manufacturing operation in Chocowinity, North Carolina.

This position provides technical engineering support for NauticStar boats, working closely with our Customer Service Department, dealer network, service technicians, and boat owners to investigate product concerns, troubleshoot marine systems, evaluate warranty issues, and develop practical repair solutions.

Unlike a traditional engineering position focused exclusively on product design or manufacturing processes, this role combines mechanical engineering, hands-on troubleshooting, technical documentation, and customer service.

The Mechanical Engineer will also create detailed repair instructions, technical drawings, diagrams, and schematics to help dealerships and service professionals properly diagnose and repair boats in the field.

We're looking for someone who enjoys solving technical problems, understands mechanical systems, communicates effectively with people, and can translate complex engineering information into practical solutions.

What You'll Do

Marine Technical Support & Troubleshooting

  • Serve as a primary engineering resource supporting the NauticStar Customer Service Department.
  • Provide technical assistance to NauticStar dealers, service technicians, and boat owners.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, structural, electrical, plumbing, fuel, steering, and other marine-related product concerns.
  • Evaluate customer complaints and dealer service requests to identify potential causes and recommend solutions.
  • Review photographs, videos, service reports, and other documentation to investigate product concerns.
  • Explain technical findings and recommended solutions clearly to customers, dealers, and internal employees.
  • Support Customer Service representatives with complex technical and warranty-related questions.
  • Provide timely follow-up on assigned technical issues and service requests.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Customer Service, and other departments to resolve technical concerns.

Warranty Evaluation & Repair Engineering

  • Review warranty claims requiring technical or engineering evaluation.
  • Investigate potential component failures, structural concerns, and manufacturing-related issues.
  • Develop practical, safe, and cost-effective repair recommendations.
  • Prepare detailed repair procedures and instructions for dealerships and authorized service centers.
  • Assist with evaluating repair estimates, replacement components, materials, and labor requirements.
  • Review technical information to determine appropriate repair methods.
  • Provide guidance regarding fiberglass repairs, mechanical systems, structural components, and other marine-related concerns.
  • Review completed repairs when necessary to verify technical concerns have been addressed.
  • Work with Customer Service and Engineering leadership to identify recurring warranty or product issues.

Technical Drawings, Schematics & Documentation

  • Create technical drawings, diagrams, schematics, and illustrations to support troubleshooting and field repairs.
  • Develop electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and component installation schematics.
  • Prepare clear, step-by-step repair instructions for dealership technicians and service professionals.
  • Create and revise technical service bulletins, troubleshooting guides, and repair reference materials.
  • Review engineering drawings, component specifications, and manufacturer documentation.
  • Ensure technical instructions are accurate, organized, and understandable for both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Maintain current technical documentation and repair reference materials.
  • Coordinate with component suppliers to obtain technical drawings, specifications, and service information.

Marine Systems & Boat Construction Support

  • Provide technical assistance involving fiberglass hulls, decks, structural components, and marine systems.
  • Troubleshoot fuel, plumbing, steering, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Evaluate component compatibility and recommend appropriate replacement parts or substitutions.
  • Review boat construction details and engineering specifications when investigating field concerns.
  • Work with component manufacturers and suppliers to resolve technical questions.
  • Support the evaluation of recurring component or system failures.
  • Assist Engineering with identifying opportunities to improve product reliability and serviceability.

Dealer & Customer Support

  • Develop positive working relationships with NauticStar dealers and service departments.
  • Communicate professionally with customers and dealers regarding technical concerns and repair recommendations.
  • Assist in resolving escalated customer service and warranty issues.
  • Provide technical guidance to dealer service personnel when needed.
  • Help dealerships understand repair procedures, component requirements, and troubleshooting methods.
  • Travel occasionally to dealerships, service centers, or customer locations to inspect boats or assist with technical issues.
  • Represent NauticStar professionally while maintaining a customer-focused approach.

Technical Issue Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Document technical investigations, findings, repair recommendations, and resolutions.
  • Maintain accurate records of assigned technical support cases.
  • Track open technical issues and communicate progress to the Engineering Manager and Customer Service Department.
  • Identify recurring field concerns and recommend corrective actions or product improvements.
  • Help develop reference materials that improve dealer support and reduce repeat technical questions.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Production, Quality, and Customer Service to communicate product-related findings.
  • Participate in continuous-improvement initiatives focused on product quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant technical experience.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and technical troubleshooting abilities.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical and technical problems and develop practical solutions.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and create engineering drawings, technical diagrams, and product specifications.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer applications.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with Engineering, Customer Service, and other departments.
  • Ability to work full-time on-site in Chocowinity, North Carolina.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to dealerships, service centers, or customer locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in fiberglass boat construction, marine service, or boat repair.
  • Knowledge of fiberglass hull and deck construction, composite materials, and structural repair methods.
  • Familiarity with outboard-powered recreational boats and marine propulsion systems.
  • Experience with marine electrical, plumbing, fuel, steering, and mechanical systems.
  • Previous experience providing technical customer support, warranty evaluation, or dealer service assistance.
  • Knowledge of American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) standards and applicable U.S. Coast Guard regulations.
  • Experience using CAD software to create technical drawings, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Experience preparing technical service bulletins, repair procedures, or troubleshooting documentation.
  • Familiarity with marine component suppliers, manufacturer specifications, and service procedures.
  • Experience in boat manufacturing, marine engineering, automotive, RV, powersports, or other durable-goods manufacturing environments.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who can combine engineering knowledge with practical troubleshooting and strong customer communication.

The right candidate should be comfortable reviewing photographs of a boat with a technical concern, discussing the issue with a dealership technician, investigating the potential cause, developing a repair recommendation, and creating the drawings or instructions needed to complete the repair correctly.

This position requires someone who is:

  • Technically strong and comfortable investigating complex mechanical or marine-related problems.
  • Able to develop practical repair solutions rather than relying solely on theoretical engineering knowledge.

  • Work is performed in office, manufacturing, and marine service environments.
  • Ability to work at a computer and review technical documentation for extended periods.
  • Ability to board and inspect boats, access compartments, and work in confined areas when necessary.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb during boat inspections.
