Job Description

Position Title: Youth Mentor

Department: Compliance

Reports To: Nicole Steck / BAGS Foundation Mentoring Support Manager

Location: BAGS Foundation - 541 Wolcott Street, Waterbury, CT

Rate of Pay: $18 - $23/hr

Position SummaryThe Youth Mentor works directly with children and adolescents ages 6-18 in the community to provide positive guidance, academic encouragement and personal development support. Working under the supervision of the Mentoring Support Manager, mentors serve as consistent, encouraging role models-empowering youth to build essential life skills, boost self-esteem, and engage constructively in their schools and communities. Key Responsibilities

• Direct Mentorship: Deliver individualized, one-on-one mentoring sessions focused on positive youth development, social-emotional growth, and academic encouragement.
• Community Engagement: Plan and lead age-appropriate, goal-oriented activities and community-based outings tailored to the mentee’s interests and developmental needs.
• Family & Team Collaboration: Maintain open, professional communication with the mentee’s family, designated school/community contacts, and the Mentoring Support Manager.
• Documentation & Reporting: Promptly submit weekly session progress notes, activity logs, and accurate timesheets to support program tracking and evaluation.
• Meetings & Training: Attend the initial match introduction meeting, complete all mandatory onboarding and mentor training, and participate in periodic check-in meetings as required.
• Brand Ambassadorship: Positively represent the BAGS Foundation, championing its mission and values across all community and school interactions.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Must be a current Post University student
  • Transportation: Valid driver’s license, reliable personal vehicle, and active auto insurance required (essential for community-based travel and activities).
  • Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional interpersonal, listening, and oral communication skills; proven ability to connect with, mentor, and motivate children and youth ages 6–18.
  • Professionalism: High degree of integrity, maturity, empathy, and sound judgment when working independently in field and community settings.
  • Administrative Skills: Comfortable using basic digital tools for email communication, electronic timesheets, and session progress documentation.
  • Background Clearances: Must successfully pass all BAGS Foundation background checks, screenings, and reference verifications.
  • Education & Experience:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required (Associate or Bachelor’s coursework/degree in Psychology, Human Services, Education, Social Work, or related fields preferred).
    • Prior experience working with youth, community volunteering, tutoring, coaching, or camp counseling is strongly preferred.
  • Approved for FWS
