Job Description:
Responsibilities

Octave is looking for a Senior Product Manager to own the strategy and roadmap for our Schematics solutions — the connected suite of tools spanning Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), Instrumentation, and Electrical design. These are the applications that plant and process engineers rely on to capture design intent, manage engineering data, and hand off consistent, standards-compliant deliverables across the plant lifecycle. You'll sit at the intersection of deeply technical users, engineering, and the business, and you'll be accountable for a product that engineers trust and that grows Octave's position in the market.

As Senior Product Manager for Schematics Solutions, you'll own the full product lifecycle across three connected engineering disciplines — P&ID, instrumentation, and electrical. You'll define what we build and why, partner with engineering and design to ship it, and measure whether it moved the needle for customers and the business. This is a high-ownership role: you'll set direction, make prioritization calls across the portfolio, and act as the voice of the customer inside Octave.

Our users are process engineers, instrumentation & controls (I&C) engineers, and electrical engineers working at owner-operators and EPC firms across industries such as oil & gas, chemicals, power, pharmaceuticals, and water. Understanding their workflows - and the data-centric, standards-driven way they design - is central to the job.

What You'll Do

  • Own the vision, strategy, and multi-quarter roadmap for the Schematics portfolio (P&ID, instrumentation, and electrical), and align stakeholders around it.
  • Talk to users constantly - process, I&C, and electrical engineers, plus the EPCs and owner-operators who buy - to build first-hand understanding of their workflows, deliverables, and pain points.
  • Understand how schematic design connects to the broader plant lifecycle (engineering data, 3D/plant design, procurement, construction, and handover) and prioritize interoperability and data consistency accordingly.
  • Translate customer and market insight into clearly scoped problems, requirements, and success metrics.
  • Prioritize ruthlessly across three disciplines and competing opportunities, balancing customer value, business impact, technical effort, and risk.
  • Partner day-to-day with engineering and design to ship high-quality releases, making tradeoff decisions as scope and constraints evolve.
  • Ensure the product supports relevant engineering standards and conventions (e.g., ISA, IEC, and customer/industry-specific practices, CFIHOS, DEXPI) and the data integrity engineers depend on.
  • Define and track the metrics that matter (adoption, retention, engagement, revenue impact) and use them to guide decisions.
  • Work with marketing, sales, and customer success on positioning, launches, enablement, and feedback loops.
  • Monitor the competitive and technology landscape in plant design and engineering software, and turn it into a differentiated strategy.
  • Communicate direction, progress, and reasoning clearly to leadership and cross-functional partners.
Education / Qualifications
  • 5+ years in product management, including experience owning a product or major area end-to-end.
  • A track record of shipping software products that solved real user problems and drove measurable outcomes.
  • Strong technical fluency - comfortable engaging engineers on architecture and tradeoffs, and able to understand technical, data-centric products deeply.
  • Ability to quickly build domain understanding of specialized engineering workflows and translate them into product decisions.
  • Excellent judgment on prioritization and scope, with the ability to say no gracefully and defend your reasoning with data and customer insight.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; able to make complex topics clear for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence across engineering, design, and go-to-market teams without direct authority.

Highly Preferred

  • Experience with engineering, plant design, or CAD/CAE software - ideally P&ID, instrumentation, electrical design, or adjacent plant/process tooling.
  • Familiarity with process and plant industries (oil & gas, chemicals, power, pharmaceuticals, water/wastewater) and the EPC / owner-operator landscape.
  • Understanding of data-centric engineering design, engineering data management, and design-to-handover workflows.
  • Knowledge of relevant standards and conventions (e.g., ISA-5.1, IEC electrical standards, as well as CFIHOS, DEXPI, data exchange standards) and how they shape engineering deliverables.
  • Background in chemical, process, electrical, instrumentation, or a related engineering field.
  • Experience with usage analytics, experimentation, and quantitative decision-making.
