Position Summary

The Associate General Counsel serves as a key legal partner to the business, providing practical, strategic legal guidance across privacy and data protection, technology, franchise and development matters, marketing and digital initiatives, litigation, and other corporate and commercial matters. This role works closely with leaders across the organization to identify and manage legal and regulatory risk while supporting business objectives and strategic initiatives.

The Associate General Counsel will independently manage a broad range of legal matters, advise cross-functional business partners, coordinate with outside counsel, and monitor emerging legal and regulatory developments affecting the company. The ideal candidate is a business-minded attorney who can translate complex legal requirements into clear, practical guidance, exercise sound judgment, and build strong relationships across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following. Other duties will be assigned to meet business needs.

Sales, Development & Franchise Matters

• Partner with Sales and Development on transfers, renewals, development agreements, ownership changes, and other franchise lifecycle matters.

• Provide legal guidance regarding franchise sales and disclosure requirements and compliance with applicable federal and state franchise laws.

• Prepare and review amendments, consents, assignments, termination documentation, and other franchise-related documents.

• Conduct legal research and analysis regarding franchise laws and regulatory requirements.

• Support nontraditional development matters and related legal issues.

Marketing & Digital

• Serve as a Legal partner to Marketing on advertising, promotions, digital initiatives, loyalty programs, mobile applications, websites, and other consumer-facing matters.

• Advise on advertising, promotions, intellectual property, privacy, consumer protection, and other regulatory requirements.

• Work with Marketing and IT on matters involving consumer data, digital platforms, and emerging technologies.

• Maintain efficient and consistent processes for legal review of Marketing initiatives.

Litigation & Regulatory Matters

• Manage assigned litigation, including vicarious liability, commercial, consumer, privacy, and other general litigation matters.

• Oversee and coordinate with outside counsel and manage strategy, discovery, budgets, and case developments.

• Respond to regulatory inquiries and other legal matters within assigned areas.

• Identify trends across claims and litigation and recommend opportunities to reduce recurring legal risk.

Commercial & Cross-Functional Support

• Provide legal support to Supply Chain and other corporate functions as needed.

• Advise on new laws and regulatory developments affecting the company and work with business teams to develop practical implementation plans.

• Support strategic initiatives and special projects across the Legal Department.

Privacy, Data & Technology

• Serve as a primary Legal partner to IT and other teams on privacy, data protection, cybersecurity, and technology-related matters.

• Support privacy reviews of new technologies, digital products, applications, websites, vendors, and business initiatives.

• Advise on consumer privacy rights, consent requirements, online tracking technologies, cookies, targeted advertising, and other digital privacy issues.

• Monitor developments in privacy, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and technology regulation and work with relevant teams to implement new requirements.

• Help develop practical training and guidance for business teams regarding privacy, data, and technology issues.
Qualifications:

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

• Approximately 5–8 years of relevant legal experience at a law firm, in-house legal department, or combination of both.

• Experience with franchise law, privacy, technology, commercial transactions, or a combination of these areas preferred.

• Interest in developing significant expertise in privacy, data protection, cybersecurity, and technology law.

• Experience advising Marketing, IT, or other business functions is a plus.

• Strong legal judgment and ability to independently manage matters while recognizing when escalation is appropriate.

• Excellent analytical, drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.

• Ability to translate complex legal requirements into practical guidance for business teams.

• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

• Collaborative approach and demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with business partners and Legal team members.
