Method to assess remote work: Supervisor will be in weekly communication with the student to monitor that the work is being completed. The supervisor will also be checking that the data is being collected and entered. Through the above communication and checking, the supervisor will be able to assess if the work hours on task are accurately represented (given the amount of time it should take to complete the work). Additionally, some of the work will be done remotely with the supervisor outside.

Job Description

  • Assistant needed to help with Caribbean bird projects.
  • The research assistant will work with AUNE faculty, and collaborators at other organizations (e.g., BirdsCaribbean).
  • Tasks will entail listening to, documenting, and classifying bird songs/calls from Autonomous Recording Units (ARU) recordings (10 hours/wk).
  • Student will enter, organize, manage, and analyze the collected data and previously collected data using Excel, R, and ArcGIS (5 hours/wk).
  • Additional work will be assisting with writing of Conservation Action Plans and Birds of The World species accounts for endangered Caribbean birds (5 hours/wk).
  • Some work might entail field work in the Caribbean during certain weeks of the year, pending permits.

Qualifications

  • Interest in research that focuses on Caribbean birds
  • Excellent data management and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of Caribbean bird songs and calls
  • Quantitative skills; ability to use Excel, and familiarity and experience with using R and ArcGIS would be an added benefit
  • Federal work study funds
