GI Alliance is seeking an experienced Medical Assistant I - Biologics Coordinator


Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:


The Biologics Coordinator is responsible for managing all aspects of biologic therapy for patients, including insurance authorization, patient education, medication coordination, and ongoing monitoring. This role serves as a liaison between patients, providers, specialty pharmacies, and insurance companies to ensure timely and accurate access to biologic medications.


  • Coordinate the initiation and continuation of biologic therapies for eligible patients
  • Obtain prior authorizations and verify insurance benefits for biologic medications
  • Communicate with insurance companies, specialty pharmacies, and drug manufacturers regarding coverage and approvals
  • Assist patients with enrollment in copay assistance and patient assistance programs
  • Educate patients on biologic medications, including administration, storage, and potential side effects
  • Track medication shipments, refills, and adherence to therapy
  • Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Monitor authorization expiration dates and ensure timely renewals
  • Work closely with providers to ensure appropriate clinical documentation for approvals
  • Handle appeals and denials, including drafting letters of medical necessity
  • Ensure compliance with office protocols and regulatory requirements

  • Experience with specialty pharmacy workflows
  • Understanding of chronic disease management (e.g., autoimmune conditions)
  • Ability to navigate payer policies and formularies
  • Problem-solving skills, especially with insurance denials

    Qualifications
    Education: High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED), medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution, or a college course in medical assisting.

    Experience: Minimum one year of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant and/or documented evidence of externship completed in a medical office. Experience working in a Gastroenterology practice is preferred.

    Requirements for Level I Status:

  • Entry level (1-4 years experience) and/or meet the basic requirements of the job with the need for additional supervision.
  • Excess of 4 years experience if meeting only the basic requirements of the job with need for additional supervision.


  • Performance Requirements:
  • Knowledge of health care field and EMR systems.
  • Skill in performing medical assistance tasks appropriately.
  • Skill in written and verbal communications.
  • Skill in understanding patient education needs by effectively sharing information with patients and families.
  • Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care practices and procedures.
  • Ability to project a pleasant and professional image.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and complete delegated tasks.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others.
