JOB OVERVIEW
Performs all the functions of a Pathology Medical Transcriptionist including proofreading reports, answering calls, filing reports and slides, scanning and faxing, transcribing medical information into the computer system, editing, printing, sorting, and answering calls,
Follows up with inquiries from medical staff and reference labs in a prompt and courteous manner,
Performs other clerical and typing duties as required,
Behaves in a manner to promote a professional team-oriented work environment and maintains a neat personal and physical environment in the work area,
Participates in the quality improvement process,
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School completion or GED required,
- Requires education and experience in medical terminology, fast and accurate medical transcription skills, computer work processing skills and office skills,
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Work and Excel,
- Must have good communication skills,
- Prior experience in Anatomic Pathology preferred
SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS:
- Part time, day shift,
- Monday through Friday,
Essential functions:
- Answer phone calls professionally and timely, assist caller with requests, and route inquiries to appropriate staff when needed,
- Maintain strong, professional communication and collaboration with Pathologists, internal staff, providers, and external callers,
- Navigate the Laboratory Information System functions pertinent to Pathology workflows,
- Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA regulations,
- Understand and utilize correct medical terminology,
- Process outside consultation requests and case addendums, including case entry, report linkage, documentation of consultation institution and Pathologist,
- Route case appropriately for Pathologist review,
- Receive, manage and process send out requests,
- Verify specimen details with case requiring send out, retrieve pertinent slides and blocks, complete requisitions for tests requested, and maintain documentation,
- Maitain records of slides & materials referred and returned to ensure continuity of material and information,
- Package send out specimens for reference labs and consultations in accordance with regulatory and safety requirements,
- Arrange courier transportation of send out materials and laboratory supplies,
- Maintain documentation and chain of custody,
- Comunicate with providers, submitters, and reference labs to obtain missing requisition details, and to follow up on outstanding send out requests,
- File paper requisitions in an organized manner to ensure efficient access and retrieval,
- Communicate with Pathologists when reference and consulting laboratory results are received,
- Print and scan reports into the Laboratory Information System under the appropriate case number,
- Monitor and conduct timely follow up on outstanding send out cases and unreturned blocks and slides,
- Fax Pathology reports, as requested,
- Ensure they are directed to the appropriate internal or external personnel in a timely and accurate manner,
- Receive incoming faxes,
- Review details, process timely, and file in accordance with department procedures
- Maintain and troubleshoot printer and fax machine,
- Distribute Proficiency materials received to appropriate sections while maintaining tracking records,
- Review, verify, and process employee timecards for payroll,
- Ensure accuracy and assist with resolving discrepancies,
- Demonstrate the ability to organize and prioritize urgent cases and assigned workload,
- Perform additional duties as assigned or directed within scope of department needs and capabilities,
