Job Title: People Advisor
Location: Stroud & Cheltenham (travel between sites required)and some remote working
Hours: Part-time (16-20 hours per week, flexible)
Salary: £30,000 per annum (pro rata)
Reports to: Fractional People Director
About The Artisan Baker
We are a thriving artisan bakery with a team of 45 across two sites in Stroud and Cheltenham, spanning bakery, front-of-house, and delivery. We care deeply about our craft and our people — and live by our values of excellence, commitment, and teamwork.
We’re now looking for a proactive and capable People Advisor to join us part-time, supporting our team and managers with HR advice, processes, and systems.
Purpose of the Role
To provide hands-on People support and guidance, focusing on payroll preparation, compliance, and improving HR processes and systems. You’ll work closely with managers, employees, and the fractional People Director to ensure smooth operations and a positive employee experience.
Key Responsibilities
Accurately prepare and maintain payroll data and employee records
Act as the first point of contact for HR queries and provide practical, people-first advice
Manage onboarding, offboarding, contracts, and compliance documentation
Support managers with employee relations, including handling sensitive conversations
Monitor and coordinate training and development needs
Implement and optimise HR systems (we use Deputy HRIS and Xero) to improve efficiency
Maintain and improve HR policies, processes, and ways of working
Uphold and promote our values in all HR activity
What We’re Looking For
Proven HR experience at Advisor or Assistant level, with strong admin and payroll knowledge
Confident optimising HR systems, ideally with experience of Deputy HRIS and Xero
Attention to detail and ability to work at pace without close supervision
Comfortable handling difficult or sensitive conversations with discretion
Proactive, organised, and keen to identify and implement process improvements
A great communicator who can build trust at all levels and across both sites
Flexible approach and ability to travel between Stroud and Cheltenham when needed
Bonus Points For
Experience in hospitality, food production, or similar environments
CIPD qualification or working towards one
Experience implementing or improving HRIS and payroll systems
