Public Policy and Advocacy Intern at ASTHMA AND ALLERGY FOUNDATION OF AMERICA – Arlington, Virginia

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) is seeking a part-time, project-based intern for approximately 10-12 weeks to support state-level policy analysis related to school epinephrine stocking legislation. The intern will analyze stock epinephrine bills introduced in 2025 across all 50 states, identify whether they passed or failed, and evaluate key provisions related to expanding epinephrine delivery options beyond auto-injectors. The project will include identifying legislative trends, documenting reasons for bill failures or successes, and producing a final report with recommendations to inform AAFA’s 2026 advocacy strategy. The intern will also assist in updating AAFA’s “Modernizing Epinephrine Stocking Laws” toolkit with case studies and model bill language. Ideal candidates will have strong research and writing skills, a background or interest in public policy or health, and the ability to synthesize complex policy issues clearly. This internship requires approximately 10–15 hours per week and offers flexible scheduling.

Objective

To conduct a comprehensive analysis of 2025 state legislation on school epinephrine stocking. The intern will:

· Identify which states introduced bills related to epinephrine stocking;

· Determine whether those bills passed or failed;

· Analyze bill language;

· Identify key success and failure factors;

· Assist in developing recommendations for 2026 sessions;

· Update AAFA’s “Modernizing Epinephrine Stocking Laws: An Advocacy Toolkit” accordingly.

Key Deliverables & Tasks

Phase 1: Initial Setup & Data Gathering (Weeks 1–2)

· Receive onboarding and background materials to provide context on AAFA’s school epinephrine stocking policy goals

· Set up FiscalNote access and receive training in tool navigation and legislative tracking.

· Identify relevant states that proposed school epinephrine-stock laws in 2025.

· Create a master tracking spreadsheet summarizing bill numbers, sponsors, statuses, and progress stages.

Phase 2: Legislative Language & Status Review (Weeks 3-6)

· Collect full text of every identified bill.

· Tag and analyze provisions related to expanding definitions or language of epinephrine delivery systems.

· Note if there were other proposed changes to the existing laws related to stock epinephrine

· For bills that failed:

o Summarize the floor or committee debate, if any, showing opposition/support

o Identify documented reasons for failure

o Reach out to legislative staff or advocates for qualitative insights

Phase 3: Evaluation & Lessons Learned (Weeks 7-8)

· Compile an analysis report covering:

o Success vs. failure by state

o Correlation, if any, between bill content and legislative outcome

o Common success factors

o Common barriers

Phase 4: Toolkit Update & Presentation (Weeks 9-10)

· Revise the existing toolkit: add state mini-case studies, sample language, recommendations.

· Present findings in a final slide deck and written executive summary to AAFA advocacy team.
