About This Position
Department: BuildingFT / PT: Full-TimeSalary: $75,000 annual salary for first license

Job Summary:Under direction of the Construction Officialand Fire Subcode Official and Electrical Subcode Official, this position has the technicalresponsibility for administering the adopted NJ Fire and/or Electrical Code as amended bythe NJ Uniform Construction Code (UCC) within the specific jurisdiction.
This positionprovides inspection of construction in conformance to the Fire and/or Electrical Subcodeand ensures compliance with the construction documents and regulated codes.Within the scope of construction, position ensures the health, safety andwelfare of the general public using and/or owning commercial/residentialbuildings and structures. Township vehicle provided for inspections.
A particularposition using this title may not perform all the duties listed in this jobspecification. Conversely, all duties performed by this position may not belisted. Perform complex technical workin the inspection of buildings for compliance with legal standards set forth bythe Uniform Construction Code, NJAC 5:23, NEC, NFPA, International Building Code,International Residential Code, ICC, and CTC in the inspections to enforce these codes to ensurepublic safety, health and welfare in so far as they are affected by buildingconstruction.
This full time, 40-hour work week, non-supervisory, AFSCME union position and salary is based on union contract. If only the first Inspector license is held, the candidate must be willing to obtain the secondary license within 12 months of hire date. We will also consider candidates seeking part-time hours, no more than 116 hours per month.
Job Responsibilities:
● Performs field inspections for code compliance with the state uniform construction code ● Maintains inspection records ● Performs plan review and review construction documents ● Promptly answers questions from citizens, homeowners, contractors and builders regarding enforcement of the building code received via phone, email, or at the in-person visits ● Attends required training to expand knowledge of the related codes and to maintain licenses held ● Attends code hearings as needed ● Attends inter officemeetings to continue a unified position on code related issues ● Occasionally receives, provides, clarifies, or exchanges information with other Township Departments and State Employees ● Meets with architects and engineers ● Prepares violations and notices, and collects information to present to the Construction Official ● Daily operations are within a highly interactive office ● This job constantly provides/delivers a service to:

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
● NJ UCC, NJAC 5:23 and all its defined responsibilities, to inspect Fire Protection work in construction projects OR Electric ICS (Industrial Commercial Specialist) license issued by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs ● Knowledge of policies and procedures, and the ability to select a course of action based on these guidelines ● Advanced knowledge of a specialized or technical field or thorough knowledge of the practices and techniques of a professional field
● Thorough knowledge of the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code ● Extraordinary customer service skills including maintaining a courteous, pleasant and professional demeanor ● Ability to maintain effective and positive working relationships with all Township employees, officials, boards and commissions, and the general public; with the ability to maintain professionalism when interacting with the most difficult people ● Ability to create accurate reports and reference code items and communicate contents effectively ● Excellent verbal and written communication skills ● Ability to obtain and communicate proper information to make accurate decisions and reports is essential Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
● Minimum of 1 year experience with SDL construction software ● Experience using Google Drive and its programs such as Docs, Sheets, and Calendar, etc.
Education, Certifications and Licenses:
● Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent ● Electric High-Rise Hazardous Specialist (HHS) License and/or Fire Incident Command System (ICS) ● If only one of the required licenses is held, must be willing to obtain secondary license within 12 months of hire date ● Fire and/or Subcode Official license helpful ● Additional inspector and/or administrative licenses issued by the NJ Department of Community Affairs that are related to Uniform Construction Code helpful ● Degree in Architecture or Engineering helpful
Physical Requirements:
● While performing the duties of this job the employee often works in outside weather conditions, walking on rough terrain, climbing, bending, and stretching ● The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration ● The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position ● Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus ● Hand / eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment ● While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand or sit; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms ● The employee is occasionally required to use a ladder, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and smell ● The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds ● Ability to work for extended periods on computer-based tasks
