The Deputy Chief of Police assists and supports the Chief of Police in the overall management and administration of the Police Department. Incumbent is committed to innovation, creativity, service, excellence, and transforming local government through leading ideas and practices. The incumbent serves as a key designer, promoter, motivator, and catalyst for the alignment of culture with organizational values within the department, and in partnership with other employees, departments/divisions, external partners and residents in delivering effective and progressive services to the community. The incumbent serves as the “second-in-command” and acts as the Chief of Police in his/her absence.

Persons hired as Deputy Chief of Police must be able to perform all the essential tasks required by the position.

Assists the Chief of Police in developing the departmental direction, priorities, goals and objectives to meet city, department, and community needs that reflect the community-oriented policing philosophy of the Northglenn Police Department. Prepares a variety of routine and special reports/projects as requested by the Chief of Police.

Responsible for integration of the department's vision, organizational values and mission into the daily operation of Patrol, Support, & Professional Standards divisions and the delivery of police services; and accountable for applying modern law enforcement concepts and systems.

Identifies and addresses organizational conditions that may contribute to misconduct, liability, or inefficiency; immediately notifies Chief of Police of the organization’s conditions that may impact overall operations of the department.

Provides leadership and strategic direction for the Operations and Support Divisions; and establishes short and long-term priorities in order to meet established goals.

May direct and/or command the activities of subordinates at major scenes.

Provide professional advice on issues to the Chief of Police, City Manager and City Council; Communicate official plans, policies and procedures to staff and the general public. Serves as liaison between the Police Department and other City departments; initiates and coordinates relations with community groups; and initiates and coordinates relations with the faith-based and business community.

Assigns work to subordinate supervisors who, in turn, direct the work of other units. Assists subordinate employees in problematic areas. Initiates appropriate disciplinary actions based on recommendations of subordinate supervisors for assigned employees. Assists citizens in solving law enforcement and community service problems.

Prepares and recommends annual budget proposals from the divisions in coordination with the Finance Department, including analyzing past expenditures to determine needs. Evaluate resources and personnel needs; identify, analyze, and address problems and trends in a timely, efficient, and equitable manner; organize activities in order to complete tasks in accordance with priorities, address multiple demands, or meet deadlines; organize tasks and working environment to maximize efficiency.

Exercise fair and impartial judgment in dealing with people of varied age, sex, race, and ethnic groups. Addresses inquiries and complaints from the public or other City divisions/service centers concerning division's programs and activities.

Perform all essential required tasks of police officer, police sergeant, police lieutenant, and police commander when necessary. Performs all other and related duties as required.

Independence of Action: Works under the general direction of the Chief of Police who sets overall objectives for the divisions and provides the incumbent with general administrative direction and review. The incumbent is responsible for the effective operation of the two divisions. Uses independent and considerable judgment and discretion in supervising subordinates, handling emergency situations, determining and formulating procedures, planning and assuring completion of assignments, maximizing resources and resolving conflicts/problems, and advising the Chief of Police in regard to public safety and related matters. The incumbent's supervisor is kept informed of progress and potentially controversial matters or far-reaching implications.


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, business management, public administration, or a closely related field or significant equivalent training in police or law enforcement which demonstrates the applicant's career potential. Master’s Degree desirable but not required.

Eight years of progressively responsible law enforcement management experience or significant equivalent training in police or law enforcement which demonstrates the applicant's career potential may be considered.

Must possess a valid Colorado driver's license. This is a sworn position - must be Colorado P.O.S.T. certified; or have a valid Peace Officer certificate in another state and be able to acquire Colorado P.O.S.T. certification within six months from hire date and Colorado Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.

A successful external candidate must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes as required by the position: oral board, agility test, reference checks, background checks, driving check through DMV, CVSA/polygraph, psychological, medical examination, drug screen, and fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI.


  • This is an exempt position (not eligible for overtime).
  • Standby is a condition of employment. This position is classified as “designated emergency personnel”.
  • Performs work using recommended and required personal protective equipment (PPE) as described in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for each task.
  • Attendance is an essential function of the job.
  • May not currently be under criminal or internal investigation.
  • May not currently be under investigation or have a sustained Brady violation.
