About This Position

Are you a college/university student looking to gain valuable career experience in local government? Consider joining our team at the City of Arroyo Grande to learn and grow in the Community Development Department.

The current vacancy is in the Community Development Department. Anticipated 20 hours per week during the summer.

To perform a wide variety of complex administrative duties in support of a department director; to provide information and assistance to the public regarding departmental policies and procedures; and to perform a variety of administrative duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from an assigned department director.
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
  1. Provide responsible and complex administrative support to an assigned department head; assist with prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
  2. Support assigned department director by performing routine administrative functions.
  3. Type and proofread a wide variety of reports, letters, memoranda and statistical charts; type from rough draft, or verbal instruction; independently compose correspondence related to assigned responsibilities.
  4. Send out notices related to departmental projects.
  5. Screen office and telephone callers; provide front counter assistance including providing information; respond to and resolve complaints and requests for information on regulations, procedures, systems and precedents relating to assigned responsibilities.
  6. Attend a variety of meetings; disseminate information as appropriate.
  7. Interpret applicable laws, rules, and ordinances affective assigned department and City operations.
  8. Operate a variety of office equipment including copiers, facsimile machine and computer; input and retrieve data and text; organize and maintain disk storage and filing.
  9. Design and prepare flyers and pamphlets for special events as assigned.
  10. Respond and perform assigned duties in the event of a City declared emergency.
Marginal Functions:
  1. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge of:
  • Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
  • Perform complex administrative support functions.
  • Perform responsible administrative work using independent judgment and personal initiative.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of related experience, or enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program in urban planning, land development, or a related field at an accredited college or university.
