About This Position

The Town Manager’s Office Intern, under the general direction of the Chief Strategic Officer or a designated appointee, assists office staff and departmental directors with special and ongoing projects. Tasks require following standard procedures, which are of average difficulty and require some decisions and judgment about the approach or sequence of procedures to be used. Deadlines and priorities in work assignments are either set by the supervisor or inherent in the task to be performed. Position requires limited contact with the public. Contact is usually structured but may occasionally involve conflict and require considerable tact and judgment.
WORK ACTIVITIES:

The Town of Flower Mound will provide an intern with a multi-focused orientation to Municipal Management. They will be able to participate in the areas of Economic Development, Budget, Public Works, Planning, Police and Fire, Human Resources, and Strategic Planning. Examples of duties the intern could include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Rotates from one department to another as assigned by the Town Manager.
  • Collects data and compiles research on designated topics; assists in budget research and preparation; responds to citizen requests for information by mail, phone, or in person; may be asked to resolve citizen complaints; assists in administrative tasks, data entry, phone answering, operations-type tasks, and filing as directed.
  • Attend various meetings.
  • From time-to-time, may be assigned to perform extra job duties that are directly, indirectly, or completely unrelated to their normal job functions in the course of presenting the designated special event(s).
  • May drive own or Town-owned vehicle to pick up or deliver needed materials.
  • Performs other tasks as directed.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business, or related field.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver's license and driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.
  • Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Prefer individuals currently enrolled and working on completion of Master’s degree in public administration.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of local government operations and processes.
  • Must have skill in the collection and compilation of data.
  • Must be able to operate a personal computer and learn applicable software packages.
  • Good oral, written, and mathematical skills are a must.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with fellow employees, Town officials, and the general public.
  • Must be able to understand and carry out oral and written directives; work well under pressure and stress; handle multiple tasks; prioritize and organize work assignments; maintain a pleasant and friendly demeanor; and maintain confidentiality of confidential matters.
  • This position will occasionally be expected to attend evening meetings.
  • This is a part-time non-benefited position generally working about 20 to 24 hours per week.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
  • To perform the essential functions of the job must be able to see and write.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. of heavy boxes, books, equipment, etc.; file and retrieve items stored on high shelves; walk, bend, stoop, reach, and climb.
  • Work is usually performed in an air-conditioned office but will occasionally be exposed to outside weather conditions.
HIPAA COMPLIANCE STATEMENT:
All employees who have access to health information whose confidentiality is protected by the HIPAA Privacy Rule must have an understanding and knowledge of the Privacy Rule that corresponds to their job responsibilities. Employees who violate the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Rule will be subject to discipline, up to and including termination.
