About This Position
- Operates various vehicles and equipment such as dump truck, backhoe, tractor, etc.
- Operates transfer truck and heavy construction equipment to transport solid waste, recyclable materials and containers to landfill, collection sites or other disposal locations.
- Places containers at collection centers, customers' homes and landfill.
- Loads and hauls dirt to various sites.
- Performs preventative and minor maintenance on equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
- Knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work.
- Skill in the operation of medium to heavy automotive equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
- Ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Minimum Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or its equivalent and one (1) year of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
Ability to obtain Landfill Operations certification within six (6) months of hire. Commercial, Class B Driver's License with Tanker Endorsements preferred valid in the State of North Carolina.
Physical Demands
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
Work Environment
Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently exposure to fumes or airborne particles, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
