About This Position

Puget Sound Workers’ Compensation Trust and Unemployment Pool (PSWCT/UP) seeks an experienced Risk Consultant to lead workplace safety and pre-loss initiatives aimed at cultivating a best-practice risk management culture to promote health and workplace safety at the workplace. The position collaborates closely and effectively with internal and external partners to prevent workplace injuries, investigate incidents/accidents, hazards, environmental health conditions, provide risk control services, and enable the adoption of risk reduction strategies to mitigate job-related risks within assigned school districts.

Purpose Statement

The job of Consultant, Risk Services - WCT/UP is performed for the purpose/s of developing, providing education and technical assistance for, and implementing safety, health, and risk control programs; investigating serious incidents, accidents, hazards, and environmental conditions; and providing risk control services to member school districts.

This job reports to Senior Risk Consultant

Essential Functions

  • Conducts risk assessments of school district facilities and investigates incidents for the purpose of identifying safety risks and providing recommendations for risk mitigation.
  • Creates risk reduction plans with districts for the purpose of enhancing member understanding of risk factors, ability to proactively identify risks, and reducing risk exposure.
  • Develops and delivers risk reduction training programs (injury prevention, hearing protection, workplace ergonomics, indoor air quality, science laboratory safety, hazardous materials management, personal protective equipment management, confined space entry, fire safety and prevention, spill prevention and response, asbestos management, etc.) for the purpose of enhancing member understanding, identification, and mitigation of risk factors.
  • Embodies the principles and practices that form our culture and commitment to becoming an Antiracist Multicultural Organization for the purpose of meeting the Agency’s End: Success for Each Child and Eliminating the Opportunity Gap by Leading with Racial Equity.
  • Maintains a variety of manual and electronic documents, files, and records for the purpose of documentation for compliance with state and/or federal requirements and documenting recommendations and actions.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops, and conferences for the purpose of maintaining professional development, presenting and/or gathering information related to health, safety, and environmental issues.
  • Performs a variety of risk control activities (e.g., risk assessment surveys, site inspections, loss trending analysis, etc.) for the purpose of identifying risks and developing risk reduction plans.
  • Compiles health, safety and environmental statistics and data for the purpose of ensuring compliance and meeting the state, federal and/or local reporting requirements.
  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g., newsletters, articles, manuals, reports, statistical analyses, recommendations, procedures, presentations, etc.) for the purpose of reporting district risk data and implementing risk reduction strategies.
  • Provides risk management advice and recommendations (e.g., review of incidents and injury trends, site evaluations, etc.) for the purpose of providing timely information to reduce injury and incident frequency and severity.
  • Researches federal and state laws, building codes, health codes, and other regulations (e.g. changes in property and liability laws, rules, regulations and best practices, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with regulations, established standards, and reduce incidents/accidents.
  • Utilizes fleet vehicles for the purpose of performing the essential functions of the position.

Other Functions

  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Bachelor's Degree in Business, Risk Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health Science, or related field; or an Associate’s degree in Business, Risk Management, or related field and 3+ years of progressively responsible work-related experience; or a high school diploma/GED or equivalent and 6+ years of progressively responsible work-related experience

· Experience providing workplace safety and loss control services

· Experience building and maintaining strong relationships with customers and business clients within a risk/carrier environment and/or business setting

· Possess a valid driver’s license & evidence of insurability


Preferred Qualifications:

· Knowledge of Washington State workers’ compensation, federal safety laws, and risk management principles to promote a positive workplace safety culture, prevent and minimize injuries, and ensure compliance.

· Experience persuading and influencing the adoption of workplace safety risk management principles and best practices using data-driven methods

· Experience in analyzing risks and developing practical safety solutions with hands-on field experience

· Experience measuring and implementing injury prevention programs with a focus on risk and workplace safety assessments to track success

· Prior successful experience servicing and exceeding customer and/or business client expectations in various settings through measurable outcomes and/or feedback loops with partners

· Effective written/verbal communication and organization/analytical skills; experience recording/writing detailed technical data and reports a plus.

· Ability to succeed in a fast-paced consulting environment, handling multiple assignments, meeting strict deadlines, and being able to re-prioritize tasks as-needed.

· Safety/risk management-related designation (ASP, CSP, ALCM, ARM, CSRM, CIH etc.)
