THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Ammon is seeking an experienced, forward-thinking Public Works Director to lead a growing, dynamic municipal organization. THE POSITION

Reporting directly to the City Administrator, the Public Works Director provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for a wide array of municipal functions:

  • Utilities: Water, wastewater, and pressurized irrigation systems.

  • Infrastructure: Streets, transportation, and stormwater systems.

  • Operations: Sanitation, solid waste, fleet, and asset management.

The Director exercises substantial professional autonomy, advising the City Administrator and City Council on capital planning, regulatory compliance, and public works policy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Executive Leadership & Strategy

Establish long-range goals and foster a culture of safety, accountability, and professional development.

Operations & Project Delivery

Oversee maintenance programs and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, including Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (IDEQ) requirements. Lead the planning and design of major capital improvement projects to ensure they are delivered on time and within budget.

Financial Stewardship

Prepare and administer the department’s annual operating budget and manage the City’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The City is looking for a seasoned professional with:

  • Experience: 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in municipal public works, with at least five years in senior management.

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field.

  • Skills: Proven success in managing complex budgets and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Attributes: A leadership style that values transparency, collaboration, and service excellence.

MEDICAL PLAN OPTIONS
The City offers five medical plans through Regence BlueShield of Idaho:
  • Platinum 500 & Gold 1500: Traditional health plans.
  • Silver 3250: A traditional plan with $0.00 monthly premium for all coverage tiers (Employee Only through Family).
  • Silver HSA 5100 & Bronze HSA 6000: Health Savings Account plans where the City contributes up to $8,321.22 annually to your HSA (depending on the plan and tier).
  • Opt-Out Incentive: Receive $400 additional per month if you choose to opt out of City health insurance due to having other coverage.
RETIREMENT: PERSI BASE PLAN
Enrollment in the PERSI pension plan is automatic.
  • Vesting: You are vested after 60 months of service credit, securing a lifetime monthly benefit at retirement.
  • Portability: Service credit follows you between any PERSI-covered employers in Idaho.
  • Choice 401(k): An optional, voluntary savings plan to supplement your pension with tax-deferred contributions.
PAID TIME OFF & HOLIDAYS
  • PTO Accrual: Full-time employees accrue 160 hours of PTO per year (6.154 hours per pay cycle).
  • Maximum Accrual: You may bank up to 480 hours of PTO.
  • Paid Holidays: The City observes 12.5 official paid holidays, including Juneteenth, Veterans Day, and a half-day on Christmas Eve.

  • City Contribution: $110 per month is deposited into your account (up to a $2,000 limit).
  • Usage: Use these funds to reimburse out-of-pocket costs for dental and vision care.
  • Voluntary Coverage: Optional dental (Willamette Dental) and vision (The Standard VSP) policies are available and can be reimbursed via your HRA.

  • Longevity Bonus: After 5 years of service, receive $100 per year of service annually (e.g., 17 years = $1,700).
  • Life Insurance: City-paid $20,000 policy for employees, with additional coverage for spouses and children.
