Works under the direction of the Histology Manager, in conjunction with the Pathology Assistant, to perform a variety of histological functions in the production of surgical, cytological, and autopsy slides in preparation for diagnosis. May be asked to learn and assist with grossing functions in the absence of the Pathology Assistant.
I. Major Responsibilities:
Specimen Processing
1. Processes, embeds, sections, and stains tissue blocks using histology techniques.
2. Performs special procedures including tissue orientation and routine H&E staining.
3. Prepares all reagents and stains used in special stain procedures.
Supply Management
1. Notifies supervisor when inventory supplies are low.
2. Distributes 10% formalin to departments and off-site locations as requested.
3. Distributes cassettes and biopsy sponges to departments as needed.
Quality Control
1. Performs quality control checks on equipment and staining procedures.
2. Ensures proper disposal of specimens and monitors chemical exposure annually.
3. Conducts daily QC on routine and special stains.
Computer and Recordkeeping
1. Enters surgical specimens and CPT codes into Meditech Path Menu.
2. Edits specimen information and creates histology logs for record retention.
3. Maintains accurate and timely documentation.
Age-Specific Competency
1. Applies knowledge of growth and development stages to patient care.
2. Demonstrates age-appropriate communication and support.
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education
Required:
1. Associate of Science (AS) degree
Preferred:
1. HT (ASCP) certification
Experience/Skills
Preferred:
1. Two years of experience in a histology lab
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
