Position Description: Position Summary

The Recreation Associate supports the implementation of outdoor recreation and conservation education programs funded through a Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) grant under the direction of the Programs & Services Director. This position supports the planning and delivery of inclusive outdoor experiences designed to help individuals and families affected by epilepsy safely explore and enjoy nature.

Programs include adaptive glamping weekend experiences, Texas Outdoor Family camping weekends, week long summer day camp, and nature-based recreational activities such as archery, fishing, birding, and conservation education. Programs emphasize conservation education, outdoor recreation skills, and stewardship of Texas natural resources.

The Recreation Associate leads program preparation, equipment management, participant engagement, and delivery of structured outdoor learning activities aligned with TPWD program standards and under the direction of the Programs & Services Director. The Recreation Associate will be required to complete the following TPWD program trainings: Texas Outdoor Family Leadership Training, Project WILD & Aquatic WILD facilitator training, Community Archery and Angler Education training certifications.

This position requires travel to Texas State Parks and outdoor recreation sites and involves active participation in outdoor programming.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Program Implementation
  • Leads planning and implementation of the TPWD grant-funded community outdoor recreation program.
  • Support and delivers structured programming including archery, fishing, camping skills, conservation and nature exploration.
  • Leads with adaptive glamping weekends designed for individuals and families affected by epilepsy.
  • Facilitates the Texas Outdoor Family camping weekends at Texas State Parks.
  • Leads youth summer day camp focused on Archery & Fishing, and conservation-based learning activities.

Outdoor Education & Participant Support

  • Delivers environmental and conservation education using TPWD curriculum such as Project WILD and Aquatic WILD.
  • Support participants as they learn outdoor recreation skills including fishing techniques, archery basics, camping skills, and Leave No Trace principles.
  • Ensure programs are inclusive, safe, and accessible for individuals with epilepsy and their families.
  • Provide encouragement and support to participants learning new outdoor activities.
Equipment & Program Logistics
  • Assist with setup and breakdown of outdoor program equipment including tents, fishing gear, archery equipment, kayaks, and climbing gear.
  • Maintain organization and inventory of recreational equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with preparing materials and transporting supplies to outdoor program locations.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow established safety protocols related to outdoor recreation activities.
  • Support safe supervision of participants during outdoor programs and camping events.
  • Assist with maintaining compliance with Texas Parks & Wildlife Department grant requirements and program guidelines
Staff Training & Professional Development
  • Participate in required Texas Parks & Wildlife Department training and certification programs, which may include:
    • Project WILD
    • Aquatic WILD
    • Community Archery Instructor
    • Angler Education Instructor
    • Texas Outdoor Family Leadership Training

Education & Knowledge
  • Associate or Bachelors degree in recreation, outdoor education, environmental science, social services, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with youth, families, or community groups preferred.
  • Experience with outdoor recreation activities such as camping, fishing, kayaking, archery, or climbing preferred.

Skills & Abilities
  • Interest in outdoor recreation, conservation, and environmental education.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 40 pounds.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends for outdoor programs and events.
  • Spanish language proficiency (bilingual English/Spanish) preferred (but not required) to support communication with participants and families.
  • Knowledge of TPWD programs a plus.

Work Schedule
  • This is a grant-funded position totaling approximately 2,400 hours during the grant period (April 2026 August 2027).
  • The position averages approximately 30 hours per week over the grant period, though weekly hours may vary depending on program schedules.
  • Work hours will fluctuate based on program planning, outdoor events, and program delivery.
  • Outdoor camps, camping weekends, and special events may require additional hours, evenings, and weekends.
  • Some weeks may have reduced hours to maintain the overall grant-funded hour allocation across the grant period.
  • Scheduling will be coordinated with the Programs & Services Director to ensure program needs are met while remaining within the total grant-funded hours.
  • Work schedules may be adjusted as needed to support program delivery and grant requirements.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Work is performed in both office and outdoor environments.
  • Outdoor programming may occur in parks, campsites, and natural areas and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, humidity, and uneven terrain.
  • Position requires active participation in outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, archery programming, and other nature-based activities.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and move program equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds, including tents, recreational equipment, and program materials.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, standing for extended periods, and walking on uneven surfaces may be required.
  • Travel to Texas State Parks and other outdoor program sites will be required.
  • May occasionally drive a 15-passenger van.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license, current automobile insurance, and reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as duties require.
  • Will participate in extended outdoor activities such as camping programs and outdoor educational events.

Additional Information: Grant-Funded Position
This position is funded through a Texas Parks & Wildlife Department grant and is currently scheduled for the period April 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027. Continued employment beyond the grant period is dependent upon future funding availability and program needs.
