POSITION SUMMARY

The Admissions Counselor supports Cumberland Heights’ mission of providing the highest quality care possible in a cost-effective manner for persons and families who are at risk for or who are suffering from the disease of addiction. Treatment encompasses the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions of recovery by offering a safe, loving and healing environment, combining professional excellence and the principles of the Twelve Steps. This position conducts treatment planning assessments and meets with clients and families regarding treatment recommendations.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include some or all of the following:

  • Conducts face-to-face substance use disorder treatment planning assessments to determine appropriateness for admission within scope of practice.
  • Conducts suicide risk assessments, and other assessments as needed.
  • Provides initial diagnoses based on assessment findings within scope of practice.
  • Communicates clearly to each prospective client their treatment options. Determines probable efficacy of treatment programs offered by Cumberland Heights as they relate to each potential patient and makes alternate recommendations when indicated.
  • Meets scheduled appointments in a timely and professional manner.
  • Communicates and cooperates with other admissions, nursing, benefits verification, and UR personnel.
  • Coordinates with a variety of payors through various communication methods to obtain initial authorization for services.
  • Acts as clinical consultant to other admissions staff regarding the admission appropriateness of persons who may have co-occurring psychiatric disorders.
  • Provides clinical supervision and consultation to other admissions staff when needed.
  • Performs CPR and First Aid as needed.
  • Documents complete and pertinent clinical information into the electronic patient record in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that a welcoming, safe, and healing environment is maintained for each patient and family.
  • Recommends ways to improve the quality and delivery of services.
  • Maintains confidentiality of company

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None

Requirements:
  • LADAC or Master’s degree in a behavioral health field required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in behavioral healthcare with addictions-specific experience required.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft (Outlook)
  • Ability to quickly learn and use various clinical, medical and telecommunications software.
  • Ability to skillfully adapt to changing circumstances and departmental needs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers in a collaborative and courteous manner.
  • Ability to problem solve and analyze complex situations and make crucial decisions while also knowing when consultation is needed.
  • Ability to manage crisis situations in a calm and focused manner.
  • Ability to work calmly and professionally in stressful situations and ally with people in crisis
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Knowledge of signs/symptoms of intoxication/withdrawal for alcohol and drugs
  • Knowledge of options for addiction treatment
  • Excellent interviewing and observational skills
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply information regarding age/cultural/population specific characteristics to patient care.
  • If recovering, two years of verifiable abstinence required with five years preferred; active participation in a twelve-step program preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Position is in an office setting that involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions.
  • Position requires frequent contact with people in crisis, including those who are emotionally volatile and may require additional safety precautions.
  • Position requires Handle with Care/First Aid/CPR certification or eligibility
  • Position is subject to varying shifts, including weekends.
  • Ability to lift up to 30lbs and/or push pull up to 100lbs; move around campus on uneven and rural terrain.
  • Ability to speak, hear, see, sit, walk, stand, reach and use fine/gross motor skills
