Adaptive Physical Education Teacher

Center for Developmentally Disabled (CDD) / Rainbow Center is a private, not-for-profit corporation founded in 1972. CDD provides residential care services and day habilitation to adults with developmental disabilities in the greater Kansas City, MO area.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, or related field.

EXPERIENCE:

2 years in Special Education, preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Classroom setting

JOB DUTIES

Instruct students, using adapted physical education techniques, to improve physical fitness, gross motor skills, perceptual motor skills, or sports and game achievement. Provide individual or small groups of students with adapted physical education instruction that meets desired physical needs or goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop programming and teaching curriculum for age-appropriate programs for children with special developmental and behavioral needs.
  • Develop goals and objectives for recreational and gross motor interventions such as sports, games, dance, drama, arts, and crafts in order to address the needs of students to improve physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning.
  • Provide data for evaluations and documentation reports as required for review and update progress report cards quarterly.
  • Provide creative non-fail, self-esteem building activities through all modalities, with emphasis in pre-readiness, self-help and behavior management.
  • Develop lesson plans for efficient and effective teaching techniques, and substitute plans as needed. Follow behavior plans as stated in the IEP.
  • Communicate with parents in a positive manner both on the phone as needed and during IEP meetings.
  • Develop and implement daily class schedule cooperatively with other staff members.
  • Collect data on daily and periodic basis for probe data to determine success and benchmark outcomes, share data on a periodic basis with Team Leader and Director of Special Education to determine success and accountability of teaching methods, teaching techniques and skills.
  • Maintain room cleanliness, orderliness and storage of materials and equipment, keep classroom bulletin boards updated.
  • Provide leadership and direction for paraprofessional staff within your classroom and other classrooms as needed.
  • Contribute to annual staff evaluations as requested for paraprofessional staff under your supervision. Also, participate with administrator in annual personal evaluation.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures outlined in the staff handbook, policies & procedures manual and Code of Ethics.
  • Maintain required licensures and certifications.
  • Attend required training classes, staffings, in-services and meetings as requested.
  • Assist in the completion of MAP-A, MAP and other state testing training as required.
  • Participate in fundraising activities and public relations opportunities on behalf of the organization as able and appropriate.
  • Meet all deadlines set by the Director of Special Education and/or other supervisors.
  • Other duties as assigned.
