Job Title: OB Surgical Tech/LPN
Department: Family Birth Place
Location: Unity Hospital
Hours Per Week: Full Time - 36 Hours
Schedule: Rotating Days/Nights; 8 to 12 hour shifts.

SUMMARY:

The OB Surgical Tech / LPN assists the surgical team by acting as the primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures, while maintaining constant vigilance over the sterile field. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the OB Surgical Tech / LPN provides practical nursing care following established standards and practices. Responsibilities include treatments and procedures within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act of New York, and the timely communication of patient status in compliance with hospital policy and regulatory requirements.

Family Birth Place:

The LPN/OB Surgical tech has many opportunities for personal and professional growth. The Family Birth Place LPN can work both as a scrub tech in the OR for c-sections and in the delivery room attending vaginal births. The LPN scrub tech also stocks rooms in between patients ensuring that we are always prepared for the next critical event. The FBP LPN also has opportunity to work as a bedside post-partum nurse, taking a 2 to 3 couplet assignment under the direction of the RN. The LPN will perform head-to-toe data collection on moms and babies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide direct and individualized nursing care under the direction of an RN, following established policies, procedures, and scientific principles.
  • Integrate age-specific, cultural, and spiritual needs into patient care.
  • Assist in patient assessment by gathering and reporting objective and subjective data.
  • Report changes in patient condition and deviations from the norm promptly and confidentially.
  • Document and communicate effectively while collaborating with the multidisciplinary team and supporting Shared Governance.
  • Promote patient and environmental safety by identifying risks, addressing concerns, and adhering to safety protocols.
  • Operate and maintain surgical equipment; report any malfunctions appropriately.
  • Prepare for surgical procedures by checking supplies and setting up sterile tables.
  • Maintain a sterile field using aseptic techniques and assist the surgeon with draping and instrumentation.
  • Perform sponge and sharp counts in collaboration with RN before and after surgery.
  • Clean and prepare surgical instruments for sterilization; prepare sterile dressings.
  • Assist in maintaining specialty surgical services and stock rooms appropriately.
  • Orient students and new staff to the unit and participate in the development of unit goals and objectives.
  • May handle medications, sharps, and syringes on the OR field as required.
  • Maintain a minimum of 15 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) annually.
  • Provide age and culturally appropriate assessments and care, ensuring communication and intervention approaches consider patient-specific needs such as vision, hearing, speech, and cognitive level.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate from an approved Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program
  • Current LPN license to practice in the State of New York
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA)
  • Successful completion of annual clinical, age-specific, and job-specific competencies
  • Strong verbal, written, organizational, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to interact professionally at all levels within the organization and the community

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience in surgical or OB settings
  • Familiarity with surgical instrumentation and sterile field protocols
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort working in high-pressure environments
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and clinical development

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

PAY RANGE: $27.50 - $33.50

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, clinical licensure date, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
