Professional Tree Care Co. is seeking an experienced Lead Mechanic who is familiar with a wide variety of diesel and gas-powered vehicles and heavy equipment. The ideal candidate will have either worked as a as a Mechanic on commercial vehicles and/or have worked as a Heavy Equipment Technician.

Since 1980, The Professional Tree Care Company has been trusted for tree services throughout Northern California. Based in Berkeley, CA, we service commercial, residential, and public works projects from Mendocino to Monterey, and from San Francisco to Sacramento.
What makes us unique? We recycle 100% of material removed from job sites at our own Green Waste Recycle Yard, custom mill logs and create organic mulch - and (soon) electricity - from the wood chips. We also have the staff, equipment, resources, and experience to perform tree services at any scale.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as the lead mechanic and point of contact for our Fleet Coordinator who maintains record keeping related to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) programs plus other local air district rules
- Perform preventative maintenance, repairs and overhauls on diesel and gasoline vehicles and equipment including chipper trucks, dump trucks, excavators, wheel loaders, and other vehicles to ensure they are in working order. Typical repairs and maintenance would include working on engines, transmissions, chassis, drivelines, hydraulic, brakes, electrical and suspension systems, wheels, and more.
- Create equipment condition reports and/or repair orders
- Oversee tools and parts inventory and ordering
- Communicate with operators, Operations Managers or our CEO regarding the status of each vehicle in your yard to determine what is roadworthy (in good working order with proper registration and licensing).
- Contact drivers/operators and our operations managers for clarification of defects and discusses preventive techniques with operators to minimize future repairs
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Clean California Driver’s License (without points!)
- At least 5 years of experience as a mechanic or technician working on a wide variety of passenger vehicles, commercial trucks, and heavy equipment
- Advanced knowledge in air brakes, tires, hydraulics, advanced electrical, advanced drive train knowledge, suspension, steering and wheel-end components training as evidenced by ASE Certification.
- Minimum of 1 year of prior experience as a technician working on heavy equipment, demonstrating the ability to service increasingly more challenging maintenance repairs.
- G.E.D. or High School degree
- Physically fit and able to lift 50 pounds routinely throughout the day; 100 pounds occasionally
- Able to stand while working an 8-hour shift
Bonus points
- Experience with heavy equipment such as skidders, swing machines, mobile cranes, bucket trucks, stump grinders, log splitters, wheel loaders
- Trade School certificate or degree as a mechanic
- Certificate in electrical diagnostics
- Applicable ASE certifications
- Working knowledge of Tier 4 emission systems
- Welding and/or fabrication skills and/or experience
- Bilingual English/Spanish
This is a full-time, permanent position that must be worked at the Green Waste Recycle Yard at 2550 Garden Tract Road, Richmond, CA.
The hourly compensation ranges at $42.00 to $45.00 for regular time and $63.00 to $67.50 for overtime, which must be approved in advance of being worked by your supervisor.
The winning candidate will receive benefits and perks after 90 days of employment including: 401(k), PTO (Paid Time Off/Vacation), holidays, an employee discount for tree work, training funds, sick days and health coverage paid at 50% including medical, dental, and optical insurance.
