You will assess high-value and intricate applications, balancing medical, financial, and non-medical risk factors to determine appropriate coverage and pricing decisions. The position requires strong technical underwriting expertise combined with strategic judgment, as your decisions directly influence mortality outcomes, product performance, and client experience. You will collaborate closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure consistency, quality, and compliance across underwriting practices. In addition to individual case management, you will contribute to process improvements, training initiatives, and broader underwriting strategy. In this role, you will evaluate and manage complex underwriting cases while contributing to the development of underwriting practices, standards, and strategic initiatives that support profitability and growth.
- Underwrite and assess large, complex life insurance applications, including high-face-value cases and those involving chronic illness or specialized riders.
- Analyze medical, financial, and non-medical risk factors to determine appropriate coverage, pricing, and risk classification.
- Make underwriting decisions within approval authority limits, ensuring adherence to company standards and profitability objectives.
- Review and approve referrals from other underwriters while providing guidance on complex cases and escalations.
- Contribute to underwriting process improvements, policy development, and business initiatives aimed at enhancing performance and efficiency.
- Maintain strong relationships with internal teams, field partners, and external stakeholders to ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Participate in training, mentoring, and development of underwriting staff as needed.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, internal guidelines, and industry best practices.
This role requires extensive underwriting expertise combined with strong analytical, financial, and medical risk assessment capabilities in a life insurance environment.
- 7 to 10 years of experience in life insurance underwriting, preferably handling large and complex cases.
- Strong knowledge of medical science, mortality risk factors, and their impact on underwriting decisions.
- Deep understanding of financial underwriting, insurance products, riders, and pricing structures.
- Experience with chronic illness underwriting, morbidity considerations, or long-term care riders is highly preferred.
- Solid understanding of reinsurance structures and automatic reinsurance agreements.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to manage high-value risk assessments.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and with external partners.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under deadlines in a structured, regulated environment.
- College degree required; professional designations such as FLMI, FALU, or ACS (or progress toward them) strongly preferred.
- Competitive base salary ranging from $125,000 to $165,000 annually
