About This Position

The mission of the Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development is to provide quality learning to people of all ages through noncredit continuing education, community services and some credit-related activities. SCF is seeking Adjunct Faculty, for our Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development department.

Job Summary:
An adjunct faculty member will be responsible for maintaining the highest academic standards in his/her particular discipline. The individual is expected to exercise professionalism in all activities related to the role of academician, including those concerned with the various duties assigned by the program manager, and any involvement with colleagues, peers, community and students. The position of an adjunct faculty member is temporary and is contracted as needed.

Under the direct supervision of the program manager, provides instruction for English for College and Communication (EFCC). This is an intensive program for beginner and high-beginner English language learners that helps them develop their everyday English comprehension and communication skills and/or reach the level of English needed to be accepted as a student at State College of Florida (SCF), depending on their individual learning goals. The program emphasizes academic English skills to prepare those who wish to continue studying at SCF in a degree-seeking program. This is a rigorous skills class with homework, tests, and required attendance.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities


CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):

  1. Provide on-site, entry level instruction for students who speak beginner and high-beginner English to develop their everyday English comprehension and communication skills and/or prepare them for entry level English at SCF.
  2. Plan, select, prepare, and implement appropriate active learning activities to meet all course competencies.
  3. Prepare and utilize reliable and valid formative and summative in-class assessment tools/techniques to measure students’ achievement of course competencies.
  4. Deliver course competencies, performance criteria, established approved grading procedures and standards, attendance and class policies/procedures, and other necessary information to students at the beginning of the course.
  5. Deliver instruction using active learning methods accommodating different learning styles and exhibiting multicultural awareness.
  6. Provide specific, individualized feedback and guidance to students regarding course progress.
  7. Review and revise delivery methods, instructional materials, learning activities, and assessment tools in collaboration with the program manager.
  8. Work collaboratively with the program manager, colleagues, and staff members to integrate instructional activities and materials.
  9. Document student attendance, ­ homework completion, and quiz/test grades.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in English, Literacy, English as a Second/Foreign Language, Reading, Linguistics, Bilingual Education or closely related field from an accredited College or University.

2. Previous post-secondary experience teaching a diverse population at the beginner English level.

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements:

  1. Ability to deliver instruction using active learning methods which accommodate different learning styles.
  2. Ability to plan, select, prepare, and implement appropriate active learning activities to meet all course competencies.
  3. Ability to develop, utilize, and update course competence and summaries.
  4. Ability to demonstrate competency in teaching English and Literacy to beginner English students.
  5. Good oral/written communication skills.
  6. Demonstrated ability and experience working with diverse populations.
  7. Ability to work collaboratively with other colleagues and staff.
  8. Ability to provide guidance and advice to students as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:


  1. Two or more years of successful post-secondary teaching experience preferably in ESL, English, Teaching English as a Second Language, Grammar, Reading Literacy, Dual Language, or Bilingual Education.

2. Master’s degree in TESOL, Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or closely related field from an accredited College or University.

3. TESOL/CELTA/ESL Certificate.
