Asphalt Paving Superintendent at Northern Improvement Company – Dickinson, North Dakota

As the Asphalt Paving Superintendent, you will supervise asphalt operations. Responsible for directing the day-to-day activities for specific projects. Co-developing, monitoring, and executing the project plan and schedule with the project manager/estimator. Operations may include, but are not limited to, municipal operations of asphalt paving and traveling mainline paving throughout western North Dakota, eastern Wyoming, and eastern Montana. Travel is required.

Duties and responsibilities

• Supervise an assigned work crew performing asphalt paving, patching, milling, and repair of streets, highways, airports, and parking lots
• Ability to operate and train employees on all pieces of equipment utilized in asphalt paving
• Read and implement plans and specifications
• Assist in monitoring mix test results and density results
• Work with the owner’s representative
• Receive and prioritize daily work assignments and makes crew work assignments
• Direct a crew consisting of equipment operators, truck drivers, and laborers on work procedures and techniques.
• Work with your crew members on attendance, personnel issues, and properly documenting poor performance
• Coordinate the timely delivery of hot mix asphalt from the plant to work sites
• Monitor the supply of materials needed to complete the job
• Complete daily activity reports of work completed, providing information on the material used, location of the work site, heavy equipment used, and crew work assignments
• Informs the General Superintendent of performance or operational problems at work sites
• Ensures safe work procedures and safe work practices are followed at work sites
• Prepares and or assists with preparations of accident and injury reports
• Assist General Superintendent to hire field crew (i.e. truck drivers, operators, laborers)
• All other duties as assigned, delegated, or necessary for operations

Qualifications

• Minimum 5-8 years of asphalt experience, with 3 years prior supervisory experience required
• Must possess a valid Driver’s License
• Ability to pass a pre-employment urine drug test and comply with drug and alcohol policies during employment

Working conditions

• Outdoor environment subject to changing conditions and temperatures
• Occasional exposures to fumes, dust, odors, heights, and loud noises
• May be required to work 60+ hours, 6 or more days a week
• Travel required

• Clarity of vision at varying distances to perform various work assignments
• Standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods of time
• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized tools and equipment
• Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally
• Occasional bending, kneeling, or crouching
• Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling object(s) weighing up to 50 pounds
