Function of Position:
Monroe Community College (MCC) seeks applicants for a temporary part-time (17.5 hours per week) reference librarian to work at the LeRoy V. Good Library on the Brighton Campus. This position is available for Spring and Summer 2026, with the potential to extend further.
This part-time reference librarian plays an important role in supporting student success by providing reference assistance and information literacy instruction as needed, using a variety of modalities including in-person interactions, Zoom, email, and chat.
Additionally, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to assist with various projects, which may include updating and creating LibGuides, participating in new student orientations, and other related initiatives aimed at supporting student success.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
- Answer basic research and reference questions from students
- Respond to questions in person, by email, chat, or Zoom
- Assist with occasional information literacy instruction sessions when needed
- Update or make small edits to LibGuides
- Help with routine library projects as assigned
- Participate in student orientation sessions if scheduled
- Refer more complex questions to other librarians when appropriate
- Keep work areas and resources organized
- Follow library policies and procedures
- Provide general support to library staff and services

Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- A post-graduate degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program, completed or expected within six months of hire.
- Strong communication and public services skills.
- Demonstrated initiative and adaptability.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.
- Ability to work weekdays during the daytime hours, with occasional evening and weekend hours as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in an academic library, preferably at a community college
- Experience providing reference services and/or information literacy instruction
- Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently
Additional Information:
Hours: 17.5 hours per week
Pay Rate: $20 - $26 per hour based on experience and MLIS degree completion

This position involves primarily sedentary work, including prolonged periods of computer use and keyboarding. The role requires the ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form. The position may involve occasionally lifting or moving items up to 10 pounds. Work is performed in a typical office environment with no adverse conditions. Occasional travel between campus buildings or to other local or out-of-town locations for meetings or conferences may be required.
